CONGRATS TO THE NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPS
SHINJO IMPRESSED METS, BUT NOT HIMSELF!
Updated March 24, 2001
Tsuyoshi Shinjo has picked up one aspect of American baseball quickly. He understands the emptiness of spring training statistics.
Shinjo, a sensation in Japan who is competing for a spot in the Mets' outfield, is batting .351 in 14 spring games. He has impressed the Mets and he is all but assured of a job. But Shinjo has not impressed himself.
"The average is pretty good and I'm doing well right now, but I'm not really satisfied with the content of my hitting," Shinjo said today through an interpreter before the Mets beat the Houston Astros, 11-4. "I've got only like two hits that I'm satisfied with. I can't really hit like I'm imagining in my mind right now."
