THE OBSERVING SECTIONS OF THE ASSA (Astronomical Society of Southern Africa) will shortly be offering certificates of achievement to members who accomplish specific tasks. The details are still under discussion in Council, but finality should be reached by mid-1998.

THE DEEPSKY OBSERVING SECTION will be promoting three levels of certificates; for the most basic, the catalogue by Lacaille must be observed and described. The most advanced award, tentatively to be known as the President's Award, will be similar to the Astronomical League's Herschel 400, except this time John Herschel gets a chance.

Observations will have to comply to a minimum standard; for details, email me.
