How to lose your mind How to lose your mind
(Everything you ever wanted to know about reality but couldn't be bothered asking)

by Geoff Allen

These outlines & a couple of dozen mantras in my notebook starting around 3 AM ...

Introduction -

If you are reading this, you are probably wondering why I called this book "How to lose your mind". I thought it was a catchy title but there's more to it than that.

I have come about as CLOSE to losing my mind as possible and still survive to tell the tale.

Just a brief autobiography ...

My current lifetime began in 1958 here in Australia. At the age of 25, I was diagnosed as having paranoid schizophrenia. For those who don't know what that means, you could Google it and see what you find. Basically, it means a person's thinking & emotions are distorted when compared with a so-called "normal" person. It usually means a LOT of suffering.

There are a few interesting views on schizophrenia. The following comes from a book called "The Troubled Mind", which I photocopied many years ago after I found it in my local library. Funny thing, I went back to look for it sometime later and it was nowhere to be found. Someone must have liked it and kept it or eaten it or something like that. Anyway, here's one section:

Since the beginnings of recorded history, man has been fascinated with the insane, with their deranged feeling, thinking, and behaviour. Insane people with fanciful delusions have at times attracted large numbers of adherents, who looked upon their psychotic leaders as prophets or as saviours of some sort. The alluring properties of the "prophet's" message may be more than just a beckoning of a way to escape from the boredom of everyday life. I suspect that many followers are riveted by a peculiarly intoxicating quality of psychotic ecstasy conveyed by the "mad" leader.

The psychiatric disease that converts man into an other-worldly creature - at once wiser than the wisest of the sane and yet so deeply troubled that he suffers more than a terminal cancer patient - is surely schizophrenia. Because of his bizarre loss of contact with everyday reality, the schizophrenic can appeal to us as a messiah bearing the message of the infinite. For our conception of the universe is bounded by the straitjacket of conventional thinking processes. A schizophrenic's self-perception is so fragmented that he seems to function at a different plane of consciousness from the rest of humanity. Some psychiatrists who have dealt extensively with schizophrenics even wonder whether the schizophrenic's "psychotic" perception of the world might not conform more to ultimate reality than does our sane vision.

Because of such doubts, Ronald Laing, a Scottish psychiatrist, questions whether schizophrenia should be viewed as a disease at all in the ordinary sense. He feels that the schizophrenic experience may be quite a natural one. In schizophrenia, individuals, for unclear reasons, have entered into an "inner world" that part of their psyche which is unconscious most of the time and which contains many of the primitive instinctual elements "discovered" by Freud. He views the schizophrenic episode as a potentially enriching experience, perhaps reminiscent of a psychedelic trip on LSD. "This journey is experienced as going further in, as going back through one's personal life and back and through and beyond into the experience of all mankind, of the primal man, of Adam and pehaps even further into the beings of animals, vegetables and minerals" If society would only allow them to embark on this journey unimpeded by social pressures, psychiatrists or tranquilizing drugs, they would emerge from it as better people.

Then there is this quote from Antonin Artaud:

There is in every madman a misunderstood genius whose idea, shining in his head, frightened people, and for whom delirium was the only solution to the strangulation that life had prepared for him.

That may or may not clear up in your mind what schizophrenia is. I have written many poems & short stories about my own personal experience which could easily fill one or two books. But what this book is about is sharing the advice & insights that I have found along this long & winding road.

You will find in these pages some quotes from famous (and not-so-famous) people; poems I have written; some websites I have found stimulating or enlightening; advice on managing the mind & the spirit; and a few mantras.

If you don't know what a mantra is, here is a brief description. A mantra is a word or a phrase that is repeated over & over as a thought or as spoken words. The aim is to calm the often frenetic thinking process that most people in this complicated, modern world experience.

Quotation marks indicate the mantras. Don't worry if some of the mantras are gibberish. Chanting gibberish is often FAR more liberating than chanting something that makes rational sense! With time, after a few years of dedicated practice, you will be able to produce your own spontaneous gibberish as you chant. You won't know yourself! Try plugging Osho dynamic meditation into Google and see what you find :)

Amaze your friends & family by repeating these mantras over & over.

You could get a similar effect from singing parts of your favourite songs.

For most of my adult life I was a VERY cynical, angry atheist. I thought anyone with "faith" was soft in the head. Or worse!

Yes, if you had told me I would get right into meditation & reading books like "Conversations with God" & treating everyone with compassion I would have absolutely LAUGHED in your face!

Leunig quote - Love one another and you will be happy. It's as simple and as difficult as that.

The game link early on plus one I feed plus Dalai cherish

What is the mind? Is it that little voice in your head that is forever judging, comparing, labelling, thinking, thinking, thinking ...

What would your life be like if you lost that voice? Would you be lost as well? Or would you experience something more wondrous than you can currently imagine?

For MUCH more on this subject, I highly recommend "A New Earth" by Eckhart Tolle. I have read it several times myself and found it VERY enlightening.

The websites included in this book are just a handful from over ten years of keen surfing the web. There are some humorous sites as well as those giving good advice. I hope you get as much out of them as I do.

If you take no OTHER advice from this book, try meditation. It can totally transform your experience of life in ways you can barely imagine. It is the greatest gift you can give yourself.

Some of the links will give you a better idea of how 2 get started with meditation. I also describe my favourite techniques. It is absolutely unparalleled as a path to vibrant health of the mind, body & spirit.

If you wanted a book on meditation, try "Hurry Up & Meditate" by David Michie or "The Meditation Bible" by Madonna Gauding. I thoroughly enjoyed both of them!

You will also find much more recommended reading at the rear of this book.

Okay, that's probly enuf preliminaries ... onto the book itself ...

A Native American elder once described his own inner struggles in this manner: "Inside of me there are two dogs. One of the dogs is mean and evil. The other dog is good. The mean dog fights the good dog all the time." When asked which dog wins, he reflected for a moment and replied, "The one I feed the most."

If meditation was available in capsule form, it would be the biggest selling drug of all time. It has been scientifically proven to deliver highly effective stress relief, boost our immune systems and dramatically slow the ageing process. It has also been shown to make us much happier and more effective thinkers. Given all the physical and psychological benefits, why aren't more of us doing it?

Love means to love that which is unlovable, or it is no virtue at all; forgiving means to pardon the unpardonable, or it is no virtue at all; faith means believing the unbelievable, or it is no virtue at all; And to hope means hoping when things are hopeless, or it is no virtue at all.

Here is a practice recommended by the Dalai Lama -

- Spend 5 minutes at the beginning of each day remembering we all want the same things (to be happy and be loved) and we are all connected to one another.

- Spend 5 minutes -- breathing in -- cherishing yourself; and, breathing out cherishing others. If you think about people you have difficulty cherishing, extend your cherishing to them anyway.

- During the day extend that attitude to everyone you meet. Practice cherishing the "simplest" person (clerks, attendants, etc) or people you dislike.

- Continue this practice no matter what happens or what anyone does to you. These thoughts are very simple, inspiring and helpful. The practice of cherishing can be taken very deeply if done wordlessly, allowing yourself to feel the love and appreciation that already exists in your heart.

It is true that overcoming obstacles and difficulties accelerates spiritual progress. The most serious lifetime difficulties, like severe psychiatric illness or physical disability, may be signs of life progress, not regress. In my opinion, it is often the very strongest souls who have chosen to shoulder these burdens because they provide great opportunities for growth. If a lifetime can be likened to a year in school, then lifetimes such as these can be likened to a year in graduate school. This is probably why difficult lifetimes are more frequently recalled during regressions. The easier lifetimes, the "rest" periods, are usually not as significant

When I see beings of unpleasant character
Oppressed by strong negativity and suffering,
May I hold them dear - for they are rare to find -
As if I have discovered a jewel treasure!

This verse refers to the special case of relating to people who are socially marginalised, perhaps because of their behaviour, their appearance, their destitution, or on account of some illness. Whoever practices bodhichitta must take special care of these people, as if, on meeting them, you have found a real treasure. Instead of feeling repulsed, a true practitioner of these altruistic principles should engage and take on the challenge of relating. In fact, the way we interact with people of this kind could give a great impetus to our spiritual practice.

The Dalai Lama also speaks about unbiased compassion. This means to treat everyone equally regardless of whether you have labeled them in your mind as "friend", "enemy" or "stranger". We do have a tendency to reserve our kindest thoughts for those who agree with us & who are most like us.

Poem written while mowing the lawn

The universe is a fathomless mystery
Or at least that is the way it appears to me
Galaxies, black holes, space, time and stars
Kittens and babies and fruit stored in jars

Some see the universe as a single thought
A moment of inspiration from some divine source
Those cosmologists tell us it continues to grow
Some of its secrets we just may never know

I often look up into the sky late at night
Watching each star as it sends down its light
This light may have traveled for billions of years
To reach my eyes which rest between my ears

I can get lost in wonder at this infinite view
There must be some nights you feel this way too
I picture a distant figure doing the same
Maybe one day he will call out my name

The universe within is at least as fantastic
Brain, heart and lungs and skin that's elastic
This skin is stretched tight over our muscles and bones
Allowing us to walk, talk and use mobile phones

Skin is also waterproof which is really quite neat
Otherwise we'd have trouble swimming or washing our feet
The great thing about skin is we each have just enough
To cover and protect all of that soft, tender inner stuff

Millions of chemicals sustain each of our lives
Just treat it right and your body thrives
Give it some water, food and the sun's rays
It should last you till the end of your earthly days

Miles upon miles of arteries and veins
Delivering oxygen right into our brains
This gas is part of the air that we breathe
Giving us one more reason to admire trees

Other plants grow in the ground beneath our feet
Which is just as well or we'd have nothing to eat
They grow by mixing sunlight, water and earth
Fuelling our bodies and adding to our mirth

Our biggest mysteries are things we can't measure
Human gifts and abilities which we rightly treasure
Ideas, genius, creativity and imagination
Art, music, and literature all spark fascination

The thoughts in this poem are a mystery too
Are they all mine or do some belong to you
I'd hate to take all the credit for myself
To do so may not be good for my health

Countless miracles around and inside us each day
Rarely do we choose that we'll see them this way
There is a place for logical, rational, linear thought
If we focus solely on it we just might get caught

Consumed by battles which need not be fought
Seeking satisfaction in things sold and bought
Defending these items like soldiers in a fort
We may find our endeavours have come to naught

This little poem really could go on for many days
There are so many things I could mention with praise
But in this crazy world where we push and we shove
The deepest mystery of them all is this thing we call love

Therapy

People told me that my life was too strange
And there were many things I needed to change
People told me that my life was so very weird
And there were many things in this world to be feared

My doctor told me that my life was far too bizarre
He offered me some medicine which he placed in a jar
He told me my mind had become distorted and flawed
And that his advice was something not to be ignored

He told me to stop dreaming and just behave like the others
I told him the ants and the spiders were my brothers
He smiled towards me as if I was quite insane
I knew there was little point in trying to explain

His advice though well meaning was based on an error
I felt his mind was in the grip of some unspoken terror
I listened closely to all his delusional views
I thanked God Almighty I was not in his shoes

His mind was stable, predictable and inert
I wondered if his soul was beginning to hurt
I felt much compassion for his sorry plight
I wished I could grant him the gift of my sight

I wandered home and I started to weep
At all of the souls in this world half asleep
Why are some of us just going through the motions?
On this planet which is covered by seven great oceans

Contemplation 101

One day I sat down
and observed my thinking
Thoughts arising
Then
         slowly
                    sinking
                                 ...
Come to think of it
what is a thought
Is it a part
Of some strange cosmic sport
Some thoughts flash by
While others linger ...
What is this tingling
In my little finger
Is my head about to explode
Am I carrying my fair load
What's that
Did a dog just bark
In my mind
I see a spark
A fire burning
In the dark
A voice that sounds
Just like a
                   lark ...

When you plant lettuce, if it does not grow well, you don't blame the lettuce. You look for reasons it is not doing well. It may need fertilizer, or more water, or less sun. You never blame the lettuce. Yet if we have problems with our friends or family, we blame the other person. But if we know how to take care of them, they will grow well, like the lettuce. Blaming has no positive effect at all, nor does trying to persuade using reason and arguments. That is my experience. No blame, no reasoning, no argument, just understanding. If you understand, and you show that you understand, you can love, and the situation will change.

The things you're dealing with are necessary for your learning and growth, so embrace them and love yourself for who you are right now. Buried Treasure

There are at least twenty different ways
To rearrange this ancient phrase
Try to forget everything you know
Down into the heart of reality you'll go

Suddenly a light is seen up ahead
You may start to wonder if you are alive or dead
Fear not and just walk right into the cave
This surely is the very best way to behave

Federal agents will rush to your assistance
But the light has a strange, unearthly persistence
A moment can seem like several thousand years
In a dimension that gives you no reason for tears

Decorated with flowers, the skeptics dance on
Dedicated to the pursuit of things I won't mention
In the beginning, the garden was quite spacious
Cabbages and lemons growing on shoe laces

If you find this verse a bit hard to follow
Here is one notion you may care to borrow
Reality is far more than you can touch and see
It responds to thoughts arising from you and from me

**********************************************************************************

"I tried 2 be normal but the voices in my head had other ideas!"

**********************************************************************************

The Pursuit of Happiness

I was born towards the end of eternity
I travelled backwards through time to this present century
I rolled a pink onion towards the next forest
The people were grateful and gave me a spelling test

I was born yesterday and the day before that
Sometimes I'm a dolphin but right now I'm a cat
My identity fluctuates in a somewhat random fashion
I keep my possessions in bags to stop them from smashing

**********************************************************************************

Well, not everyone has their life totally together - in fact I would say that very FEW have it totally together ... and I know what that feels like ...

**********************************************************************************

Lumpy Custard

Life is a bowl of lumpy custard
If your dreams are old and rusted
Life is a spoonful of soggy porridge
An endless quest for useless knowledge

Life is a series of unanswered questions
Everyone is desperate to offer suggestions
All known opinions are arbitrary and incomplete
Truth rests silently between your head and your feet

**********************************************************************************

"Stay tuned! Coming up next, another AMAZING episode of people being normal!"

**********************************************************************************

A Grain of Salt

Life is a game without any rules
A game that is played by wise men and fools
A game that has no beginning or end
Where each of us learns new ways to pretend

This next verse really needs some work
Sometimes I feel like such a jerk
A little patience and a lot of luck
And we can avoid being hit by that truck

Just bring your mind
To a complete standstill
And you'll have more bliss
Than you know how to handle

You may laugh
You may even scoff
You might just wish
To twist my head off

Nevertheless I speak the truth
No doubt you'll ask where is my proof
What's true is true is true it's true
There is no difference between me and you

Saying a prayer will help you to remember that you are not in this alone, that in fact there is a benevolent force that is always available to us when we call on it. The prayer might sound something like this: Dear Spirit, I ask that you make your presence known here and now, for I am very frightened and don't know what to do or how to handle things. Please infuse my being with your light, surround me with your love, that I may be lifted up and carried by your grace. Whisper into my thinking the inspirations that will help me through this. Help me to be clear and calm. Embolden my heart with the courage to stay present and connected, for I know that in that presence lies my healing. I ask you to guide me - and everyone involved in this situation - every step of the way. Lift my spirit into a higher vibration that I might grow from this experience and become my greatest potential. Let there be a miracle. I am open and willing to have a miracle to occur. Let the healer within me rise and take charge. I thank you in advance as I know that it is already so.

The more you can sincerely reach out annd ask for help - not only from Spirit but also in spiritual fellowship from friends or a support system - the more you will relax knowing that, on a very real level, everything is being taken care of. Go to places where you feel most in touch with your spiritual nature. Sit in a chuch or temple; walk through a meadow or wade into the gentle current of a river. Hang out with your animal companions. Visit a guru or spiritual teacher whom you respect. Soak up all the positive energy you can find and let it carry you through this difficult time.

Human Behaviour

Why don't we recite poems
To the people that we meet
If they're having an ordinary day
It could be just the treat

Why do we need instructions
On how we should behave
Searching for the perfect advice
From the cradle to the grave

At any given moment
We could be sane or crazy
To switch from one to the other
Simply pick up a daisy

Yes, one ought 2 be compassionate toward the unenlightened because you KNOW what it is like and how you rarely have peace-of-mind or it is fleeting ... there was more but I forget ... you know from DIRECT experience it is fundamentally unsatisfying! ... and people do MANY stange things in response!

Another poem written without the assistance of drugs

My life has become such a boring event
I sleep under the stars without even a tent
My life seems like one thing after another
Where everyone I meet is my sister or my brother

Reality is one of the things I am interested in
When I think about it my head starts to spin
Then I take a nap and collect all my thoughts
And sort them into categories of various sorts

At death, who knows where your spirit may go
It may depend much on the seeds you now sow
Or the sticks and stones and insults you throw
Already your thoughts are beginning to slow

I shout out words and they make no sense
Because my mind dwells in some future tense
If you like to think that I am insane
Take another look at your own brain

Human beings are formed by unknown forces
Chinese people seem to love their sauces
I spend all my dollars down at the shops
Where even the slowest penny eventually drops

My life has been ruined by microscopic dust
I wonder if there's a soul on earth I can trust
My thoughts are so feeble and really pathetic
The skin on my face looks awfully synthetic

I'm only kidding about those last four lines
A cosmic prankster who is unafraid of fines
You might think it strange or somewhat askew
That I even bother to say these things to you

I should be locked away from the rest of humanity
So that I can explore the boundaries of my sanity
My life has been miniaturised by the Australian government
The federal employees know just where the money went

I was so busy working for the people
Inside the church and it's golden steeple
Oliver sudden I fell to the ground
Upon hearing a single and most sacred sound

I was lost and have now been found
Inside my very own burial mound
I was born in the middle of my own internal nightmare
However it appears, life is never unfair

People always ask me if I have lost my mind
I thank themfor their concern and I know they will find
The golden shape of tiny robots dancing
Whistling and chanting can be life enhancing

I want to live in a world
Where everyone understands their own directions
And illness is always cured
Without any need for painful injections

I bet you won't live in the shade too much longer
As all of your muscles and tissues grow stronger
A bone in the hand is worth two in the corner
There must be a reason why the winters are warmer

Some men and women can glow in the dark
While looking for a nice place to park
In their individual minds there are many avenues
So they go into the newsagent to buy some new shoes

Our technology has advanced in huge leaps and bounds
We now have plastic discs which play our favourite sounds
Yet our understanding of our selves remains laughingly primitive
How often do we sit and wonder about the universe in which we live

Most people have barely a clue about their true identity
You are infinitely more thatn you believe yourself to be
This poem will be continued inside your head
Think of it when snug and curled up in your bed

Karma

In a very real sense this message is not new
Just one soul's tale of how it finally got through
A belief is an idea you hope is quite true
Allow it to become more real to you

There are many laws which govern our lives
From men in skyscrapers to bees in their hives
One law is karma, you are free to ignore it
If you want a picture, I will try to draw it

The law of karma is a complete mystery to most
They would rather believe in UFO's or a ghost
The law of gravity keeps our little planet spinning
While karma keeps track of losing and winning

If you hate something you only destroy yourself
So why not just leave those poisons on the shelf
Love your enemies - I wouldn't suggest it's easy
I promise it won't make you unbearably queasy

Send out kind thoughts to those who need it most
You can do this as easily as putting jam on your toast
Whatever you send out will return to you one day
Try to bear this in mind whether at work or at play

Karma flows smoothly from one lifetime to the next
This is why we humans are so often perplexed
By events and calamities that defy any explanation
You may find the answer in another incarnation

Like any other law, you are free to ignore it
Every action is the result of another before it
It closely resembles Einstein's theory of relativity
It pervades each and every human activity

I wish you all the best on your karmic travels
And as the mystery of your existence unravels
Think about me as I am thinking about you
You may find it quite an enjoyable thing to do

Law of Life

Whatever you give away today
Or think or say or do
Will multiply about tenfold
And then return to you.

It may not come immediately
Nor from the obvious source,
But the LAW applies unfailingly
Through some invisible force.

Whatever you feel about another,
Be it love or hate or passion,
Will surely bounce right back to you
In some clear or secret fashion.

If you speak about some person,
A word of praise or two,
Soon tons of other people
Will speak kind words to you.

Our thoughts are broadcasts of the soul,
Not secrets of the brain.
Kind ones bring us happiness,
Petty ones, untold pain.

Giving works as surely as
Reflections in a mirror.
If hate you send, hate you'll get back,
But loving brings love nearer.

Remember, as you start this day,
And duty crowds your mind,
That kindness comes so quickly back,
To those who first are kind!

Let that thought and this one
Direct you through each day
The only things we ever keep
Are the things we give away!

The Secrets of Heaven & Hell

The old monk sat by the side of the road. With his eyes closed, his legs crossed and his hands folded in his lap, he sat. In deep meditation, he sat. Suddenly his meditation was interrupted by the harsh and demanding voice of a samurai warrior. "Old man! Teach me about heaven and hell!"

At first, as though he had not heard, there was no perceptible response from the monk. But gradually he began to open his eyes, the faintest hint of a smile playing around the corners of his mouth as the samurai stood there, waiting impatiently, growing more and more agitated with each passing second.

"You wish to know the secrets of heaven and hell?" replied the monk at last. "You who are so unkempt. You whose hands and feet are covered with dirt. You whose hair is uncombed, whose breath is foul, whose sword is all rusty and neglected. You who are ugly and whose mother dresses you funny. You would ask me of heaven and hell?"

The samurai uttered a vile curse. He drew his sword and raised it high above his head. His face turned to crimson and the veins on his neck stood out in bold relief as he prepared to sever the monk's head from its shoulders.

"That is hell," said the old monk gently, just as the sword began its descent.

In that fraction of a second, the samurai was overcome with amazement, awe, compassion and love for this gentle being who had dared to risk his very life to give him such a teaching. He stopped his sword in mid-flight and his eyes filled with grateful tears.

"And that," said the monk, "is heaven."

People with healthy self-esteem accept themselves for whom they are now and where they are in life. They love and accept others as they are they truly are capable of loving others unconditionally. My Favourite Psychosis

My life is a mesmerising collection of textures
And sub-textures
Time distorts all of my biological structures
Thoughts float silently through my consciousness
Like butterflies on a warm summer breeze
I watch them
And call out to them
But they take no notice
They all have flowers to visit
I sit back and watch all this neural activity
I could quite happily do this for an eternity
Eternity is really a single miraculous instant
It dwells in all regions but leaves no imprint
People say their voices and their lives are real
I wonder on what level they can understand or feel
I may be insane but I don't really mind
In touch with infinity and the souls of the blind
I am the gradual improvement of blameless circumstances
I find myself asking questions which have no answers
My psychiatrist believes that I'm Jesus Christ
He has told me so once or twice
My doctor walked into the room
And said build me, build me a paradise
My doctor walked away from the gloom
Saying show me, show me your paradise
I was chosen by name
I generated my data
I stopped in mid-stride
To become a martyr
I guide with a smile
Towards the turnstile
I grow younger and less confused each day
I send children out to play and to pray
I have gifts for the blind and for the meek
There are many words I intend not to speak
I live in twelve separate realities at once
This sometimes makes me seem like a dunce
My picture of reality evolves from one moment to the next
This can leave those around me bemused and perplexed
I cling to no particular view or perspective
I would rather spend time being reflective
Or a remote controlled robot detective
I am everybody and nobody at the same time
I float down the tunnel towards my own lifetime
I am the twelve apostles seated around a table
I speak my truth each moment as well as I am able
I have completely dismantled my own consciousness
My mind is as cold and as calm as the surface of Loch Ness
Being psychotic may be Heaven or it may be Hell
There is no way in advance you can ever tell
Psychosis has given me a tiny peek inside the mind of God
This is why my behaviour on occasions may seem a trifle odd
Do not worry - it is really not so terribly bizarre
Inside my head is all the light of an exploding star
I create each of the circumstances which I am experiencing
This may sound strange but you all do the very same thing
I praise the ghosts of all my former and future selves
I find enchantment behind the boxes on the shelves
This poem in one attempt to describe the indescribable
The same problem confronted the authors of the Bible
Along the inner landscapes of my heart and soul
I seek the light that can make my world whole
People said strange things towards me
While they investigated my life
Their words used to cut more deeply than a knife
I hear all the insects as they conspire against me
As they have done for countless centuries
My thoughts have been embezzled by subatomic aliens
When they speak they sound just like Australians
People put rocks in my head
To watch them rattle
I walk down the road
To talk with the cattle
I am a three dimensional being
With new ways of seeing
I have become my own best enemy
I see the world unfold in front of me
I am structured as if by chaos and pure chance
Inside my brain the electrons dance in their trance
My thoughts evolve in non-linear fashion
Living in wonder is my singular passion
My life is a game of unconnected dots
Pebbles and candles scattered amongst the rocks
My mind is a swirling, random chaotic mess
Strangely this rarely causes me undue stress
I sold my soul to the angels above
They help it to soar inside a white dove
I believe that the glorious nightmares of existence
Are best experienced with minimal resistance
In the darkness I hear voices
The distant echoes of long-forgotten choices
I sit and wait patiently for a moment of inspiration
Trusting each thought to find its own destination
I am the lion that rests with the frightened lamb
You only see a three dimensional image of who I really am
My life is a self-replicating event
Growing smoothly from unstructured cosmic intent
Each day is a magical mystery tour
A smile from a stranger is often the cure
With the passage of time my opinions become fewer
Most of the ordinary diversions have lost their lure
My universe has become one giant coloured fractal
The internal and external merge in the eternal
I am an individual member of a vast collective soul
I often wonder why I chose such an unusual current role
Being psychotic can mean creating ecstasy out of thin air
An ability which at this juncture is unfortunately rare
I am the scattered remnants of a lost and lonely world
I touch the sky
But often lie
On the ground
Tightly curled
I journey to horizons you may scarcely even imagine
Along the way
I pause to pray
And refuel my engine
Psychosis is a thoroughly misunderstood phenomenon
Its true dimensions can only be measured in song
Psychosis has taught me that reality is elastic
That no person or situation is ever truly static
That surface appearances are never ever the full story
That the purest soul has thoughts which may seem gory
That the air is something which connects us all
That there is nothing to ignore no matter how small
At this point in history confusion and debate seem to rule
To suggest all these things I may be a fool
That's okay. No, really, that's cool
Just wait till the film gets to the next spool
Psychosis may seem a curious route to euphoria and nirvana
I find it as easy and natural as peeling a banana
Psychosis is a rip in the space-time continuum
A riddle and a paradox wrapped up in a conundrum
I no longer belong to what you call reality
My soul wanders far beyond eternity
It often visits me for a holiday
Despite my best wishes it just cannot stay
I found God through psychosis
This may sound strange but if you focus
There are infinitely many paths to the divine
Yours may be somewhat different from mine
I flow through time and space
Watching the lines appear on my face
My eyes have stolen light from the stars
I walk along the road and dodge all the cars
People walk around in gloom
Never entering the golden room
I seek the undiluted ecstasy of madness
In a world plagued by every conceivable sadness
Normality has become a barren and plastic landscape
Many souls naturally create their own individual escape
I stroll around in my long fluffy socks
Keeping all my memories in a little yellow box
Sleeping with my pockets full of tiny rocks
I'm starting to enjoy living inside this paradox
By tomorrow afternoon this reality will no longer exist
We will return to our original state of unrestrained bliss
If you have any lingering doubts which persist
Imagine crushing them inside the fingers of your own fist
I bark like a dog and howl at the moon
I eat my sandwiches with a wooden spoon
I roll and I crawl towards understanding
I am prepared for just one more soft landing
Half an onion in a sesame seed bun
My work down here is almost done
There are many more verses on their way
But you won't be reading any of them today

"When we come into contact with the other person, our thoughts and actions should express our mind of compassion, even if that person says and does things that are not easy to accept. We practice in this way until we see clearly that our love is not contingent upon the other person being lovable."
