Which is Better? Ask Mr. Tomato!

1. Internet Explorer vs Netscape

IE's AutoFill function, which is not available in Netscape, is very useful.

IE is very slow in downloading files.

You can save a web page as Web Archive in IE. This is very useful, too.

IE is not 100% compatible with Adobe Acrobat (Writer).

2. Adobe GoLive 4.0 or PageMill 3.0 vs Macromedia Dreamweaver 3

Adobe GoLive and PageMill have a lot of bugs. Especially, when you try to embed background texture in the preview mode, the computer freezes! Dreamweaver is a wonderful web page maker. PageMill is only for bigginers. You have to know how to write HTML if you wish to use PageMill. PageMill doesn't even support blinking text.

3. SoftWindows 98 vs Virtual PC Windows 98

Mr. Tomato has never used SoftWindows 98. Virtual PC Win 98 is very affordable. VPC v. 2.1.3 works great. If you want to use USB, you need to upgrade it v. 3.

4. Dr. Solomon's Virex 6.1 vs Norton AntiVirus 6.0

Virex is pretty good because it now supports Apple's Contextual Menu. I don't know if Norton AntiVirus supports it.

5. Eudora Light 4.31 vs Outlook Express 5.02

QUALCOMM has started incorporate advertisement into this popular e-mail program. Nothing is free, we know that. But if you don't pay, you don't even get "Easy Open" function after the evaluation period. Outlook Express still remains free.

Mr. Tomato's Buying Recommendation

1. Action GoMac 2.0.2

A lot of useful Mac OS functions have been stolen by Bill Gates, but we cannot deny the fact that he also added some functions that Mac OS doesn't have. It's pretty useful to have a menu bar at the bottom of the screen, which can hide itself. The price is affordable.

2. SYQUEST SyJet 1.5 GB

You can buy one for $30 or so at an Auction site. It's much faster than I'd expected. No sign of breaking down.

3. VPC for Windows 98 v.3.0

You need at least 35 MB of RAM to run VPC in addition to some 20 MB for System. You can run almost any Windows program unless it requires DirectX. But you can't smoothly e-mail attachment graphic files with Eudora or Outlook Express.

4. Adobe Acrobat 4.0

The full version is pretty expensive, but it should be worth every penny you've paid. Regardless of the application you used, if you PDF-print out, all you need is Acrobat Reader to reproduce the document. One of the greatest Mac software application that I've used. It's a shame that Internet Explorer is not 100% compatible with this great software. Netscape 4.7.3 is about 80% compatible.

Mr. Tomato's Don't-Buy Recommendation

1. EPSON printers including Stylus 740 SE

Japanese manufacturers have earned good reputations in taking care of their customers. But EPSON AMERICA is an outlier. EPSON AMERICA admits that Stylus 740 SE is defective, so its price is going, going down. Even if the brand-new printer you've just purchased is defective, EPSON doesn't have a 1-800 number. EPSON technical assistants are prett silly. They even hang up on you while you are waiting. Replacement parts never arrive, and you have to call them over and over, paying for the long distance phone call out of your pochet. When they hang up on you, don't expect them to call you back because they don't. EPSON's Overnight Exchange Warantee? Forget it! I havn't even received my replacement ink cartridges since I called them 2 weeks ago. If they can't do it within 2 weeks, can they do it overnight? Get real. If the printer is defective, do you really think they are going to pay for overnight shipping for a new printer in addition to the shipping cost for the defective one?

2. entrega USB to Mac Serial CONVERTER (CON-USB-D8)

This converter is not 100% compatilbe with all serial devices. Even if entrega says it is compatible with HP DeskWriter 600, it is NOT. If you complain by e-mail, they will simply ignore it because ... they've already got your money.

3. Zip drives

Zip drives are cheap because the quality is cheap. If your Zip drive is still working one year after purchase, you are a lucky winner.

3. Purchases at uBid

No, no, no! That won't be a goooood idea. I've recently bought an ink jet printer. It was advertised with a $50 mail-in rebate. They first didn't send me anything. Then, they sent me a rebate claim form. They don't know the difference between a main-in coupon and a rebate form. Not many uBid customer care representatives know how to read anyway. Without a mail-coupon, there will be no rebate from the manufacturer. Oh, some software is missing, too. They've offered me a full refund for returning the product instead of figuring out how to distinguish a mail-in coupon from a rebate form. Again, if they don't know how to read, ...

Mr. Tomato's Shareware of the Year

1. Graphic converter 3.9 Download it!

It's neat. No question about it. How do we live with it. But, compared with PhotoShop (command + "+" or "-"), we can't change the viewing size with a short-cut key.

2. FinderPopss v. 1.8.9ss Download it !

If you hold down the mouse button, a menu pops up. Pretty neat.

3. Kaleidoscopess v. 2.2.3 (USD25)ss Download it!

You choose a "scheme"and let Kaleidoscope decorate your Mac's desktop.

4. Icon Toolsss v. 1.6 (USD15)ss Download it !

You choose a "scheme"and let Kaleidoscope decorate your Mac's desktop.

4. DropIconss v. 2.5.1 (USD10)ss Download it !

Using DropIcon's contextual menu, just choose it on a picture file.
