My Personal History
by Michael Halm
I have always been interested in the strange and unexplained. The first non-textbook that I ever bought was Impossible Yet It Happened (previously called Forgotten Experiments). It wasn't until I discovered the books of Charles Fort that recognized that I was a fortean, a strange data collector with an attitude, a playful, philosophical one, not an agenda.
The SIG History
The SIG began in March 1977 soon after I joined Mensa with a listing of possible interests, all taken from topics in Fort's books:
abominable snowmen, Acambaro, airquakes, ancient technologies, apports, ashfalls, ball lightning, Bermuda triangle, Bigfoot, bio-showers, black holes, blobs, bloody rains, burning dirt, cloudless rain, crystal skulls, cup marks, cyclops, devil jelly, Devil's hoofprints, disappearances, etc., etc., etc.
In 1980 our membership peaked (probably because of our article, "Winter's Mysteries", in the March 1979 Mensa Bulletin ) at over 100. Since 1989 (what we call our "recent history") the SIG has relied on Hierogamous House, which in 2000 became untilheaven.com .
Alas (some would say "mercifully") a few of our past newsletters have been lost over the years, but even so it's still quite an eclectic collection -- hopefully soon to be collected into 25 Years of Mpossibilities. We're also hoping to do what we call Eg 'n' Art's Almanac based on our Fortean calendars, etc.
