Tony MEDEIROS

How appropriate. My first encounter with Tony Medeiros, I saw a quiet, humble unassuming young man, wearing a Superman tee shirt . Only this Clark Kent's phone booth is a set of Yamaha drums! He sits behind his kit and transforms into...well... I will not say Superman, but he is clearly not the same mild- mannered gentleman you saw earlier. Tony morphs into this ferrocious powerhouse, displaying groove, chops and independence with equal aplomb.

Tony has won numerous drum contests including Modern Drummer Magazine's "Undiscovered Drummer Contest". He then was requested to perform at their "MD Festival 2K". It was at this event I was able to hear him first hand. During his brief sound check, the staff, crew and others in the auditorium were drawn to the stage to check out the "new kid". His dexterity around the kit was extremely impressive.

If you were fortunate to have heard him play, you quickly realized that he is for real. As evident on his debut release entitled "Monkey Business", he proves he belongs. This CD will not disappoint you. It showcases Tony's compositional skills as well as highlight his formidable chops , eloquent grasp of independance and solid grooves.

His performance blew away an auditorium filled with drummers. Tony received a standing ovation for his efforts. Later he confided to me that he was petrified! You need not be my man,...you can PLAY !!!

Review

From start to finish, you hear articulate drumming in various idioms of music. Tony seems to embrace each genre he takes on. What really makes this CD stand out are the compositions themselves. Tony proves to be an inspired song writer to go along with his tasteful drumming skills. These tunes are memorable, not your typical 'HEAR ME PLAY' tunes. By the time you are finished, you will find yourself humming these songs.

The talented musicians assembled here are top notch players which compliment the music and each other. The title track, Monkey Business, is a latinesque tune in which Tony employs the left foot clave technique (popularized by "Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez) while playing some wicked stuff on top! While "Funky Chicken' seems to pay homage to Dave Weckl. The rest of the album runs the gamut of styles...taking you from a funk shuffle, to rock, to a nice samba, to fusion. My favorites are tracks 1,3,6,7,9, and 10 -*(not listed in the liner notes). Check out this entire CD!
