Windows users know that whenever they hear a sound
or a piece of music, big chance is they are listening to a WAVE file. WAV
is the standard extension for windows sound files. Wave files can give
you perfect sound quality. The big problem with wave-files is though, that
they take a lot of diskspace. A high quality wave takes 10 megabytes for
each minute of playtime. This means that a song of 3 minutes takes 30 megabytes
to store. That's a whole lot of diskspace.
This is where mp3 steps in. Mp3 (which stands
for MPeg layer 3) is a way to compress your wave file. The same song of
3 minutes that took 30 megs of diskspace in wave format uses 1/10 of that
amount, approximately 3 megabytes, in mp3 format. So now you can store
a whole lot more songs on your harddrive than was ever possible with wave
files.
To play wave-files, you can use programs like
the windows multimedia player or any other program that is capable of playing
sound files. You will see though, that these programs are not suitable
for playing mp3 files. For playing mp3 files, you will need a special mp3-player.
The best known player is Winamp.
