(Who Is George Suhon?)
George
Suhon began playing the accordion at the age of seven. His first accordion, an
80 bass Fradella, was purchased by George's father for twenty five
dollars.
George learned to play "on his
own". He had no formal training for two years when, at the age of nine, he
had his first lesson. By this time He had developed a good ear for music.
George had the innate ability to hear a song and play it back from memory!
George received his musical ability from his father, George Sr., who was also a
musician. George Sr. was known in the western Pa. area as a top notch banjo
player. It was George Sr. who nurtured the talent passed on to his son. George
Sr. was a great lover of polka music and dedicated his time to playing and
promoting polkas in the western Pa. area. He was the banjo player for the Western
Pennsylvania Button Box Club until his passing in February, 1998.
George and his father started playing in small clubs and bars as a duo act when
George was just 9 years old. Georgie(as he came to be known) and George
Sr. played polkas and waltzes as well as standards and became fairly well known
in their home town of Avella, Pa. as well as the surrounding area including the
Ohio valley. After a couple of years a new member was added. John Harding,
George's cousin, came on to play the bass guitar. The band came to be known as Georgie's
Polka Gems and later as The George Suhon Orchestra. Later, a drummer
and saxophone player were added to the band. The band became very popular in the
polka circle of western Pa. appearing on the Gil Yurus Polka Review as
well as playing for many polka dances.
In his teenage years George decided to branch out into the music community and
into other genres of music. The band changed its name to Silver Sky to
appeal to a broad range of audiences. George Suhon and Silver Sky continued
until 1996 playing in various venues, nightclubs and weddings playing mainly
dance, oldies and top 40 music. On New Years Eve of 1996 George played his last
"gig".
After quitting the band George decided to write and record a polka album for his
dad, George Sr. George Sr. passed away in 1998 after a long bout with heart
disease. He heard the many of the compositions George had written although he
never got to hear the final product. The album is appropriately dedicated to
George Suhon Sr. George's plans are to remain in the polka field and carry on
the dedication his father had for polka music.
George intends to continue writing and recording in the future. He continues to
make music in the studio and to help other musicians put the ideas and music
onto recorded media.
