Working
with Managing & Commercial Directors, led turnaround team at this leading
European national newspaper through redefining strategic goals and achieving
operational profitability. Overcoming a burden of unresolved debt and meager
resources, we achieved annual increases in advertising revenues averaging
30% gains each year (‘93, ‘94 & "95), despite shrinking national advertising-spend
figures and a severe economic recession - and reversed circulation decline
in a national newspaper market that had fallen by 5% a year for previous five
years.

* Led the financial rescue and re-launch team on StreetScene, which
went onto to become a highly successful competitor to Record Mirror and Smash
Hits. Streetscene introduced Hip-Hop, Rap, Eurobeat, House & Dance
music to Britain.
* Increased circulation of Style a monthly, full-color, high-gloss,
lifestyle and consumer magazine aimed at affluent Arabs and Indians/Pakistanis
worldwide - from 38,000 to almost 400,000 over two years and brought annual
advertising revenue to over 22 million pounds. Managed and developed all aspects
of commercial and editorial operations - brand development, marketing, developing
new markets, distribution management, advertising sales management, financial
controls and processes, purchasing, led major presentations to advertising

Trained as a reporter with the Irish Press Group of three national newspapers
- The Irish Press (daily), The Evening Press (daily) and The Sunday Press
(weekly). Continued as a reporter specializing in paramilitary politics and
the Northern Ireland conflict, began writing a number of varied weekly columns
before moving to, first, The Cork Examiner (a national daily) and, then, to
The Irish Times (leading quality daily) as a parliamentary reporter.
Joined The Sunday Tribune as Arts Editor after a sabbatical as Marketing and
Press Director of The Dublin Theatre Festival, then one of the leading theatre
festivals in Europe, where I was responsible for the promotion of 78 separate
major productions over a three-week period achieving a 50% increases in
pre-festival ticket sales and over 85% paid, seat-occupancy. Emigrated to
London and a job as journalist with one of the leading quality newspapers
in Britain, The Guardian - better known in the US as The Manchester Guardian.
