This site has online information on why the sky is blue. This is the most frequently asked question on the web, believe it or not!
Hello, my name is Richard Getz or "Prof. Gwyn Williams" at Renaissance Fairs.
I give demonstrations of 16th century science and technology at RenaissanceFairs, museums, and schools. At renaissance fairs, there's allot of hoopla going on, and most people want to see a show rather that hear a lecture. So I do my presentations in a "museum tour" format demonstrating everything from Aristotle to Sir Isaac Newton.
I would like to expand my show and present more often that I do now: Unfortunately, creating props, models, and the logistics of transporting it all gets a bit expensive. So after answering your question on why the sky is blue, please visit my stores and affiliates, and thank you for your support.
Why the Sky is Blue
T he sun emits white light waves which is composed of all the light wave colors in the light spectrum. Each color has its own frequency (wavelength).
As sunlight passes our atmosphere, the light is reflected and refracted (bent) by air molecules ( the gasses that make our atmosphere). Particulates such as water vapor and dust are also a factor. Reflecting and refracting diffuses ( scatter) light waves in all directions. Because the ultra violet and blue is more dominate in the spectrum and have short waves, it is more scattered than the less dominate green, yellow, orange, or infrea red light which have longer waves that are more easily broken up. For that reason, blue is the color in the sky.
So, to recap,
(A) White light enters our atmosphere,
(B) our atmosphere defuses, filters out long wave light (green, yellow, orange, red),
(C) ultra violet and blue short waves become dominate in the atmosphere.
(D) The heavens appear to be blue.
