I would like to talk to you about a subject that has been bothering me for some time now. I get calls everyday from clients who have agonized over the computer problems they are having. Most of the time the problems are minor and could have been taken care of by the client himself or herself. The reason they don’t fix the problem themselves is that they just don’t have the knowledge.

In fact there are very few people out there with the knowledge to troubleshoot and repair their own computers. It would seem that an industry as big as the computer industry would have a backlog of people who can fix them. But there is not very many people who have the knowledge to do it themselves. My beef is that, for the most part, schools, training centers, vocational schools and other educational or teaching organizations don't even offer this kind of knowledge.

I work with many businesses and schools that assign one person or another as the computer "guru" in their organization. This person usually gets picked because he shows some interest in computers. He or she may or may not have much experience with computer hardware. They are usually trained well in the software products but not in the computer hardware. (Some people are not aware that there is even a difference). One of the responsibilities this person is assigned it to communicate with the outside computer technicians who are paid big bucks to make the hardware repairs as they arise. This step in the repair process would be eliminated if the company "guru" had the knowledge to make the repairs themselves.

I for one can certainly relate to this ! About 15 years ago I had my own construction company. When we had computer problems, such as a hard drive that went dead, we would hire one of those highly paid computer technicians to fix the computer and charge us big bucks. We didn't actually hire him to charge us big bucks but that seemed to go hand in hand with those guys, a few hours of work and a $300 bill for labor plus a healthy markup on any repair parts.

Well after a while and lots of computer troubles, I got smart and figured out that it was about time to save my money and make my own repairs. A few years later, guess I was a slow learner, I also figured that I could build my own computers and not only save money doing it but also could specify which parts that would go into it.

You are probably saying about now, yea right, just like that you are the do it yourself computer guru.

Well, you're absolutely right. It took many hours of hard work and and frustrating study for me to get the knowledge I needed. But, the way I figured it, if I was going to pay the computer technician between $65-$150 per hour to do the job, It certainly was worth the effort. And like most of you that spend some time at a hobby, in the evenings or on weekends, I made computers my hobby.

After a while I was not only repairing my computers, but also those of my friends. As the word got out, and word always gets out about people who have computer skills, I was soon repairing all kinds of PCs for other people and being paid to do it. It made for a nice little extra income on the side. It was nothing to charge $25 or $30 bucks an hours when the computer companies charge so much more.

I made a lot of contacts in those days, and one thing led to another and soon I was building computer systems for others. I even had my own label made for the front of the computer case. From George I learned where and how to purchase the parts at wholesale cost as well as the nuts and bolts of building computer systems. Buying parts at wholesale tremendously reduced my costs. The best part was I was making $500 per system profit, and still beating the prices in the computer stores. This kind of information you just cannot find in library books. Now, I realize that in today's computer market you can purchase a whole system for dirt cheep, which may make it harder to profit from selling computers you make, but read on:

Like I said a minute ago, companies pay between $65 and $150 per hour for computer repairs. Now ask yourself: are you working for a company that pays for computer repairs ? Also ask: If you had the knowledge to make those repairs could you be saving your employer between $65 to $150 per hour labor charges. In addition could you also save money on the markup (up to 100%) on parts that the computer repair companies are charging? Now just think by making these repairs and saving the company money it would be easy for you to ask for additional compensation at your job, and the best part about it, you would get it.

Another reason I know you could ask for more money in your paycheck is because it happened to me. I went to work for a company who believed in keeping up with the times when it came to computers. They had a maintenance agreement and were paying outside companies for repairs and upgrades to existing hardware as well as troubleshooting software problems and installing software upgrades. I took over these responsibilities for which they were paying $1000 per month. We are talking $12,000 grand a year I was able to save them. Besides saving them money I had the chance to make life much more comfortable around the office. When computer problems arose I was right there to the rescue. No longer did they have to make frantic calls to an outside firm, then wait,sometimes for days, for a solution to the problem.

The real business opportunity arose when they were looking to add 10 more computers. I was able to purchase the parts for about $500 less than what the computer stores wanted and built the computers myself. This worked so well that all future computers were purchased the same way. How can the boss turn down $500 savings for every computer they buy. Do the math, I was saving a lot of money for my organization and you can too. When I asked for a raise that year they increased my salary by $7000.

You see, to buy computers at discount prices like you see in the Sunday newspaper inserts for virtually under $500 you have to sign up for 3 or 4 year internet provider contracts. Your boss is not going to buy 4 computers with internet service he does not need. He is going to pay between $1000 and $1500 for each unit, more if they are custom designed for a special purpose.

Just take a look at the money your company spends on computer repairs and adding new computers. Take out a piece of paper and a pencil and do the math and see how much more valuable you become to the company if you do the repair, install the upgrades and built the new computers they will need. As I said before another very large benefit to the employer is the down time is decreased because you are right there to do the work when repairs are needed. You can purchase spare parts and just swap them out when needed. You become the hero. You become more valuable to the company.

Can you see where this will open a door of opportunity for you? Another side to this is that you can start a small computer repair or computer sales business, of your own, in the after work hours. If you can save $500 on the cost of building a computer over the price of computer stores then you could easily charge $400 over your wholesale cost and beat the competition by $100. I currently charge $500 over cost. Even though my prices match the department store's price people like dealing with someone who actually knows something about computers instead of some kid in a pair of black pants and a little green vest embossed with the store's label.

It’s very easy to see that with this kind of knowledge you could build your own computers, sell them and make a substantial income from your home. Have you ever wanted to be your own boss? Your employer may be willing to buy computers from you(that you build at home) rather than using your time at work to build them.

Get some cards made up and distribute them to other companies you associate with on your job.

Give some of those cards to family, friends and customers and ask them to hand them out for you.

Just a note on business cards. I used to put 5 cards in my shirt pocket each day. My goal was to give these out, one to 5 new people each day. I would say "Hey guess what I have been doing lately ?" and then hand them my card. I want to tell you that this works. People would rather deal with someone they know or at least someone they have met rather than someone they do not know at a department store.
