Free Internet
Last Updated 1/12/01
I search the internet and this is what I find. These are ABSOLUTELY FREE ISPs(Internet Service providers) around the US that I have tested. When I find more, I post them here.
Note: Spinway and 1stUp (they powered the free internet companies) went out of
business, so a large number of Free Internet Providers are stopping service.
Free DSL
Winfire is a company that started out as the first "Free DSL" provider. I HAVE NOT TESTED THIS ISP. Obviously there is an ad that is on your screen when you are online. Also you are required to have the winfire toolbar on. I signed up for Winfire in the summer of 1999 and in Novebmer I recieved an e-mail telling me that DSL is going to be available in the next 30 days. They have different speeds available, but the one that is free goes at 144k (about 3 times faster than stndard 56k modems). The only trick is that you have to buy a spacific modem from them for $199 (you can also get it from the manufacturer for the same price). So far, I have ordered the DSL line and modem, and waiting for it to get shipped to me. When I talked to them they told me that there are no additional fees.
These ISPs have ad banners
address DOES NOT EXIST ANYMORE! You can still download their software, but when you open the program, it says that they are looking for a free internet provider to merge with, to transfer the accounts to.
Altavista DOES NOT EXIST ANYMORE!
BlueLight DOES NOT EXIST ANYMORE!
Finally dotNow had fixed the errors in their software. Their old virsions didn't, but not it does. It actually connects fast and surfs fast. The only disadvantage is that once in a while ads pop-up and you have to wait until they load up, then you can close them.
Now Freei DOES NOT EXIST ANYMORE! There were lots of complaints on Freei in the last year or so, but not when it first came out.
Free 'n Safe DOES NOT EXIST ANYMORE!
FreeLane(FreeWorld), is made my Excite. Letely I have not been able to get connected because it gives me a busy signal, and that is the only number that is availiable without long distance.
iFreedom DOES NOT EXIST AMYMORE!
Finally Juno decided to make a free ISP and not just e-mail. It comes with an e-mail program, and an ad is always up when you surf. It also seems that they really pressure you with ads into updating to their NOT free internet. Juno bought FREEWWEB because FREEWWEB went out of business, which is one of the best ISPs.
Lycos DOES NOT EXIST ANYMORE!
myfavoritei DOES NOT EXIST ANYMORE!
NetZero is probably the most used free ISP there is and the first TRULY free ISP. It has no problems with sofware and has plenty of phone numbers to connect to.
NoPay displays an ad, that is considerably smaller than others, while you are online, but when I connect NoPay stops responding. So far it is only supported in Washington.
Software DOES NOT EXIST ANYMORE!
I like StartFree(formerly known as Tritium) has an ad that is slightly bigger than the standard ads. Also, there is only about one phone number per city, which slows down the connection.
web.com DOES NOT EXIST ANYMORE!
These ISPs DO NOT have ad banners
FREEWWEB DOES NOT EXIST ANYMORE! All the FREEWWEB users are now getting transfered to use Juno. FREEWWEB was a really good ISP, too bad that it is gone.
NoCharge as of December 1, 2000, will not let you dail in with their default name and password. Now they require you to download a dailer that will be used to dail in to their free service. The only dissadvantage is that NoCharge is only availiable in Washington State, Oregon, and New York.
