       HISTORY

This site is dedicated to the family of Chaim Tarnopolsky, who was born in 1843 year in a small Ukrainian city Rzhischev (Ржищів)

The last name Tarnopolsky means "from Tarnopol", Ternopil today, a town in the west of Ukraine which was included to Russian empire in 1809. Suchlike last names were been usually given to people who changed place of residence.
It's known, citizens of Poland didn't have last names. Only after attachment the part of Poland to Russia people were been delivered with last names. Therefore, two generations before Chaim could be Tarnopolsky by surnames, no more.

Chaim and his wife Sure had 14 children. The senior was born in the middle of 1860s, the young was born in 1899. Only 11 names left in our memory.

Helel(Harry), Moysey(Max) and Laka emigrated in 1906 to USA.
Benjamin joined to them in 1920.
Their mother arrived in USA in 1924; she was 80.

Rest of Tarnopolskies have been staying in Russia.

Abram Tarnopolsky was a guardsman, died from Typhus in 1921 who was young.

Gitel Tarnopolsky was born in Rzhishchev , Ukraine in 1899. Her daughter, Hen…? corresponded with members of the Tarnopolsky family in Philadelphia until 1975. Hen died in 1982.

Vladimir (Velve) Tarnopolsky – was born in Rzhishchev , Ukraine about 1885. He married Sonja and they had three children; Israel , a daughter and Menachem. Tragedy then befell the entire family. Israel shot himself in 1932 because of a problem associated with his war service. The daughter was killed by a bomb when she tried to escape from German troops in 1941. Menachem was killed on the German front in 1942. When Sonja heard of this, she jumped onto a railway and was killed by a train.
