| Croatia is a former Yugoslav republic on the Adriatic Sea; it is about the size of West Virginia. Part of Croatia is a barren, rocky region lying in the Dinaric Alps. The Zagorje region north of the capital, Zagreb, is a land of rolling hills, and the fertile agricultural region of the Pannonian Plain is bordered by the Drava, Danube, and Sava Rivers in the east. | Slavonia (Serbo-Croatian Slavonija), region in eastern Croatia, between the Sava and Drava (Drau) rivers. It is bounded on the north by Hungary, on the south by Bosnia and Herzegovina, and on the east by the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Approximately 20,720 sq km (approximately 8000 sq mi) in area, Slavonia contains a large amount of fertile agricultural land and also has oil deposits along its eastern edge. Major crops include apples, cherries, pears, plums, corn, potatoes, soybeans, sugar beets, and wheat. The chief city in Slavonia is Osijek. Other major towns include Pozega, Slavonski Brod, Vukovar,Nasice,Djakovo and Vinkovci. | |||||||||||||||||||
