Jim Kaat turns in great performance against California
BROOKLYN - Jim Kaat had some fun again. California Kaat (7-11) struck out 3 and walked 1, throwing 65 of 119 pitches for strikes. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Mike Piazza provided Brooklyn with the offense Kaat needed as he finished 3 for 4, homering once, doubling twice, scoring 2 runs and collecting 2 RBI. Brooklyn improved it's record to 50-55, scoring 4 runs on 8 hits.

Baltimore's Alomar severely injured
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's second baseman Robbie Alomar suffered a
serious injury when he was struck by a pitch from Texas 's Rube Waddells. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Alomar will
probably miss 5 weeks. Baltimore wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Alomar had suffered a Broken Hand. His season features a batting average of .249 (80 hits in 321 AB), 21 doubles, one triple and 5
long balls. Alomar collected 23 RBI and 50 runs as well.

Vic Willist dominates Brooklyn, gives up just 2 hits
NEW YORK - New York's right-hander Vic Willist is a great pitcher.
And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Brooklyn on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 3rd time he has done it in his career. Willist (7-5) struck out 8 and issued 3 BB, throwing 69 of 114 pitches for strikes. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' The hitting star for New York was The final score of the game was 8-0.

It's NO-NO time for Sam Mcdowell against New Jersey
NEW JERSEY - Hayward's lefty Sam Mcdowell is a really great
pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking New Jersey on no hits. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today, and it's especially nice to do it in such fashion.' Mcdowell (6-7) struck out an astounding 15 and walked 2, throwing 78 of 102 pitches for strikes. Ryne Sandberg helped Mcdowell at the plate, he got 1 hit in 4 AB, doubling once, and collecting 3 RBI. Hayward improved it's record to 46-59, scoring 4 runs on 4 hits.

The American League Player of the Week award goes to Shane Mack, Knoxville's starting leftfielder. Mack helped his team with an average of .458 and 8 RBI in 24 at bats.

Joe Dimaggio from Ohio wins his 3rd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. He hit .455 with 8 RBI and slugged 1.136 in 22 at bats.

New York's Sheffield earns Batter of the Month award
It's the 1st time that the American League Batter of the Month award goes to New York's
right fielder Gary Sheffield. Gary pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .402 with 11 and 24 RBI while slugging .878. While compiling an on base percentage of .398, Gary hit .291 and slugged .553. He has collected 62 runs batted in this year. He's 7th in the American League in batting!

Ohio's Williams earns Batter of the Month award
Ohio's leftfielder Ken Williams had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. He hit .330 with 24 RBI and slugged .680 in 97 at bats. Williams has walked 31 times this year and posts a .339 OBP. While batting .281, 111 for 395, he has driven in 80 runs. He's 6th in the National League in batting, 3rd in homeruns and 1st in RBI!

Walsh (TOR) wins monthly pitcher award
Ed Walsh pitched like a legend in July, and the American League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He struck out 32 hitters in his 5 starts, putting together a record of 4-0 while pitching 32 innings. His ERA in July was 0.22. Ed got two complete game shutouts as well! In 21 starts this year Ed struck out 96 batters in 174.1 innings of work. His ERA is 1.08, his record 18-0. Ed has pitched 5 shutouts and 10 complete games. He's 1st in the American League
in ERA and 1st in wins!

Vickers (STL) wins monthly pitcher award
Winner of this months National League Pitcher of the Month award is St. Louis' Rube Vickers. He struck out 14 hitters in his 4 starts, putting together a record of 2-1 while pitching 14 innings. His ERA in July was 0.29. Rube pitched a shutout as well. This season Vickers compiled an ERA of 2.67, going 6-9 in 19 starts. He fanned 59 while giving up 118 hits in 131.1 innings. He has 2 complete games and one shutout.

Don Pavletich out for 7 weeks
HOUSTON Houston 's catcher Don Pavletich will miss at least 7 weeks after he got hurt seriously in a collision at home plate. He laid on the ground without movement for several minutes and had to be carried off the field. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Fractured Wrist. Surgery will be performed next week. Don has gone 54 for 354 (.153) this season, hitting 8
long balls and driving in 36 runs. He has scored 34 runs on his own.

Nedington Hahn out for 5-6 weeks
ALBANY - Albany is without its ace Nedington Hahn for at least 5-6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Jose Canseco in a game against Men In Black. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being taken to a local hospital, Hahn was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Ruptured Bicep Tendon. Opposing players hit .269 against Nedington this season. While posting an ERA of 4.17 he went 3-3 in 11 starts, fanning 60 and walking 19 hitters.

Ohio's Gordson severely injured
OHIO - Ohio's Joe Gordson suffered a serious injury Wednesday in a
game against New Jersey. Gordson fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 6 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Gordson was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Torn Abdominal Muscle. He has hit 8 taters while batting .247 this season. His 84 hits and 51 walks add up to a .349 on-base percentage.
