The
National Hepatobiliary and Enteric Surgery Research Center, Ministry of
Health, P. R. ChinaUnder the supervision of Ministry of Health, P. R. China,
the National Hepatobiliary and Enteric Surgery Research Center (NHESRC)
is one of the national important clinical and research centers. The director,
Professor Zhang Yangde, has been working hard together with two other vice
directors, Professor Lu Xinshen and Professor Liao Juzi. The goal of NHESRC
is to improve both research and clinical levels of Chinese hepatobiliary
and enteric surgery and catch up with international new standards and innovations.
Approved by Ministry of Health, the academic committee of NHESRC has engaged
many Chinese and overseas medical experts as members. Professor Qiu Fazu,
a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), professor Wu Mengcao,
also a member of CAS, join in the committee as guest directors. The staff
of NHESRC comprises long-term or short-term scientists, and fixed or guest
experts. Among the academic committee, there are three from CAS, 21 professors,
and 12 assistant professors. NHESRC is able to recruit students for Medical
Doctor and Master degrees, and Medical Engineering Master degree. The center
includes research branches involved in different topics such as liver,
biliary, and rectum surgery, a ward specialized for hepatobiliary and enteric
surgery, clinics of hepatobiliary and enteric surgery experts, and curing
rooms consisting of colonoscopy, biliary tract endoscopy, ultrasound endoscopy,
and laparoscopy. The research branches are responsible to experiments and
clinical research connected with diagnoses, treatments and postoperative
evaluations of hepatobiliary and enteric surgery and own 8 labs (about
200M2) with advanced devices. It accepts about 10,000 clinical and residential
patients every year and has been in charge of a series of national, provincial
and ministry projects. The finished project Microexplosing biliary tract
stones was considered as an international innovation.The tendency and emphasis
of NHESRC lies on endoscopic surgery with advanced endoscopic system, ultrasound
endoscope and electronic endoscope which are used routinely. The object
of research is to be among the first group who begins the research of treating
abdominal diseases under endoscopes, attains earlier diagnoses, and takes
non-laparotomic regimens.Three major topics of NHESRC are hepatobiliary,
rectum and enteric diseases, and clinical medical engineering. The staff
are combining basic research and clinical reserarch, and cross-studying
new techniques and materials involved in different subjects to molecular
and proton levels. The contemporary projects include: the Research of proton
pinnacle of inherited hepatobiliary stones, the Research of adjusting and
controlling genes related to biliary stones, the Molecular research of
inherited deterioration of polyps in a family, the Autofluorescence detecting
system for early colon cancers under endoscopes, the Research on manufacturing
PCR machine and Taq polymerase, the Hereditary mechanism of biliary stones,
the `H-NMR spectrum of colon cancer gene mutation, and the Jet operation
knife. Scientists and technicians have acquired some innovative breakthrough
on these mentioned projects.Advanced techniques and equipments, suitable
staff structure, and frequent academic exchanges with fellows from both
China and other countries are the center's advantages. Until now, the center
has established close research and clinical relationship with NIH (U.S.A.),
NCI (U.S.A.), the American advanced military medical fund association,
Sweden, Canada, Germany, U.K., Spanish, Brazil, Taiwan, Singapore, and
Russian.The center editors and publishes three national journals: China
Journal of Endoscopy, China Journal of Modern Medicine, and Clinical Medical
Engineering Journal which are in the charge of Ministry of Health. Research
Branches1.The research branch of Liver surgery:Research on new techniques
and methods for pathology and treatment of liver diseases. Currently, scientists
are studying immune level and treatment for patients with liver cancer
such as detecting IL-2 mRNA level, and combined treatment of LAK/TIL cell
and oncocyte. The branch is continuing basic and clinical research of liver
lobulose jet operation knife. These projects are in the lead in the world
and with new plots and high feasibility.2. The research branch of biliary
tract surgery:Research on pathology and preventions of biliary stones.
The branch is among the first to study the hereditary mechanism of biliary
stones by biomolecular genetical method. It has finished the work of blood
sampling around some parts of families and will adopt mini-satellite technique
and close chain marking to analyse samples. The emphasis of treating biliary
stones lies on microexplosing, fluidified electricity disintegrating and
dissolving stones in order to find the most optimum method for patients.
These methods have gained a lot of finiancial and social profits. 3. The
research branch of rectum and enteric surgeryResearch on new diagnoses
and treatments of rectum and enteric diseases. The major topics include
autofluorescence detecting earlier colon cancer, NMR spectrum of genes
related to colon cancer, and molecular genetics of inherited enteric polyps
deterioration. Advanced equipment and outstanding faculty make it guid
many postgraduates and doctors. High frequency electricity incising under
endoscopes and micro wave treating hemorrhoids have cured lots of patients.4.
The research branch of clinical medical engineering:Research on the development
of new medical devices and products. The finished projects include PCR
machine, Taq polymerase, some medicines such as Xiaojianzong Congji, Fufang
Moyu Pill, Jichang Shan, and oncocyte. All mentioned medicines have attained
national patent and been conferred the New Medicine certificate. Some product
can replace inported products and save money for China. The branch will
continue research on new medical devices and reagents taking the place
of inported products according to new demands of Chinese marchet, and find
