Dark Star (1974)

Starring Brian Narelle and

Directed by John Carpenter

Doolittle
Dark Star is a hilarious parody of  2001: A Space Odyssey.   In the year 2250, the crew of the spaceship Dark Star must carry out the tedious work of clearing solar systems for colonization.  They spend their time traveling through space, locating and destroying unstable planets.  Apathetic and bored with their routine work, the astronauts irritate and amuse each other in various ways (at one point, they accidentally eject their entire supply of toilet paper).  As in 2001 ,  some of the leading characters are non-human:  Mother, the  ship's computer, and Bomb 20, a prissy know-it-all who is determined to detonate against orders.   The "Lesson in Phenomenology" scene with Bomb 20 and crew member Doolittle is legendary.   John Carpenter wrote Dark Star while he was still a film student.  His co-author,  Dan O'Bannon,  later wrote the screenplay for Alien

Starring Bruce Dern
Directed by Douglas Trumbull
A ripple in space
Silent Running is a touching and gentle science fiction film; it's a nice, restful change from the usual action and hardware.  The hardware in this movie is cute and named Huey, Dewey, and Louie.  The movie depicts a time in the future when earth has been devastated by nuclear war.   Bruce Dern stars as Freeman Lowell, a botanist working in the spaceship "Valley Forge".   His ship is one of a whole fleet that carries the last of earth's plant and animal life.  Entire ecosystems exist in gigantic domes attached to the ships' outer hulls.   Tragic consequences result when the fleet receives an order to destroy the domes and return to earth.  Here is a brief review from the Edinburgh University Film Society.  Silent Running was one of Douglas Trumbull's first films.

Escape from New York (1981)

Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken Escape from New York Theater Poster Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken
Starring Kurt Russell     Directed by John Carpenter
In 1997, Manhattan Island has been turned into a maximum security prison full of convicts who are armed and have nothing to lose.  Air Force One crashes there while carrying the president.  As Snake Plissken (Kurt Russel), a war hero turned criminal, is going to prison, he is given a choice: save the president in exchange for his freedom.  The theme music by John Carpenter is unforgettable; it's a major highlight of the movie.  I acknowledge that Escape from New York can just barely be categorized as science fiction. If it did not involve any futuristic technology (and there is some), it would probably have to be categorized only as an action/fantasy movie.
In case you haven't memorized it, here is the warm and fuzzy greeting
Snake Plissken receives as he enters prison:

"You now have the option to terminate and be cremated on the premises.
If you elect this option, notify the duty sergeant in your processing area."

Blade Runner (1982)

Holden's eye
City spinner
Starring Harrison Ford                    Directed by Ridley Scott

Blade Runner has many serious flaws, but it's still a great science fiction movie.  The special effects are great,  the theme music by Vangelis is beautiful, and the overall atmosphere of the movie is perfectly suited to the story line.  Harrison Ford stars as Deckard, that famous replicant hunter.  He is tired of killing and wants to be left alone.  However, the replicants on one of the off-world colonies stage a rebellion, and the rest is history.  Deckard is an interesting character.  There is speculation that he was a replicant himself.   Read more about him in this review titled "The Clearing of the Mist". dBlade Runner is loosely based on Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.
