This family has been traced to Coteau landing which is just outside of Montreal. Nowadays it is part of Les Coteaux, Vaudreuil-Soulanges, Montérégie, Quebec
The Amirault/Mireault website claims that the surname Mero is from the Amirault/Mireault name of French Acadians who settled in Ontario after being driven from Acadia and that Mero is the name adopted by those families who moved from Ontario into Michigan. However this family is apparently from the Quebec side of the border not the Windsor region of Ontario as the site suggests.

another source has birth as the 12th.
Farmer
both 1879 & 1900 Mecosta County, Michigan Plat maps show G. Mero owning 40 acres at NE1/4 SW1/4 Sec.28 T13N R9W (Deerfield Township) and the 1879 shows a building there (the 1900 one does not show buildings). Interestingly, this is right across the street from land show as owned by H. Strope on the 1900 & 1981 maps.
The Mecosta County Pioneers website lists him as being born in 1838. "Gilbert Mero, farmer, ... His parents still reside in Canada. Mr. Mero went to Upper Canada at 19 years of age, where he was married in the fall of 1857... They went to Ohio and remained four years, returned to Canada for a short time and moved to Deerfield. Mr. Mero bought 40 acres of uncultivated land and proceeded to do pioneer duty -- build a log house and clear the forest. He has 32 acres under fair cultivation. The family religion in Catholic."
