Found this family in A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England, Before 1692. Volume #3 Rogers - Rose By James Savage listed under Roise or Royce, noteing that the name often appears Rise or Rice and may have been sometimes confounded with Rose.
Also information from Somerset Visitations by Philmore & Company, Vol 1, p.116, & from court records of Wallingford, CT, both quoted by Mrs. Seth Hall of Meriden, Ct. in the Nebraska and Midwest Genealogical Record, Lincoln, Nebr. January, 1924, Vol. 2, No. 1.
Originally had this family as Rice and it seems the name often got changed back and forth between Royce & Rice.
There have been several possible ancestry lines proposed for Royce: Much of the confusion is that there may or may not of been two Robert Royce's in early New England, as many believe James Savage confused the two for one, though it could be read either way. Some believe there was only one, some two, others even suggest one was the father of the other.
My 10th Great Grandfather (once) & My 11th Great Grandfather (thrice over), Robert Royce
"Of Martock, Somerset." ??
Born 1 Mar. 1561/2 in England OR c. 1603 in Somerset, England. Died 1676 in New London, New London Co., Connecticut Colony. Married 4 Jun 1624 in Long Sutton to Mary Simms/Sims.
Shoemaker
Savage lists his wife as Elizabeth but then later in the same paragraph has her as Mary. Savage also has the following lines about him:
*ROBERT, of Boston, as early as 1631 or 2; freem. 1 Apr. 1634, ... was one of the disarmed 1637, as a supporter of Mrs. Hutchinson in her revelations, or of Wheelwright in his opinions; had rem. bef. 1657 to New London (which was known as Pequot until March 1658), perhaps in 1650 was of Stratford, but constable in 1660 and in 1661 rep. for N. L. (New London?) where he liv. in good repute, ... of his s. Nehemiah, Samuel, Nathaniel, Isaac, and Jonathan, the four first rem. to Wallingford, aft. m. in New London, and Lothrop (his son-in-law) also rem. to W. He d. 1676, and his wid. Mary was liv. on his est. 1688.
Mrs. Hall gives the following:
He is said to have come in the ship Francis from Ipswich. He was first found at Stratford, Ct. In 1644, he was at New London, Ct. He died 1676 and his widow was living on his estate in 1688. (But Note: New London was not settled until 1646, and known as Pequot until 1658, However Stratford was settled in 1639, albeit then named Cugheag untill 1643.)
Pane-Joyce gives a Baptizmal of 9 Jun 1603 in Martock, Somersetshire, that Robert settled at Stratford in 1644/48 and at New London in 1660, that he was a Member of the City Council, and finally relays an argument by Clarence Leslie Hewitt, Jr from Some light on the marriage of Robert and Mary Royce of Connecticut from the New Eng. Hist. Gen. Reg. 122 (1968) pgs. 274-277, for the Marriage as 4 Jun 1634 at Martock, Somerset, England, though also giving the 1624 date. And seems to be trying to make a case that there were two seperate Robert Royce/Roise, one of Boston, and one of Massachussetts, based on this second marriage and the one line in Savage.
Perhaps he was in Boston 1631/2, moved to Stratford/(Cupheag) 1644, and then to New London 1646 or later?
e-familytree.net has that he was the son of Thomas Royce and that he was born 1603 at Martock, Somersetshire, England, Married 1st Abt. 1620 in London to a Lettice and then 2nd to Mary Elizabeth Sims Abt 1625 at Martock, Somersetshire, England.
My 9th Great Grandfather, Nehemiah Royce
Born 1636 in ??Boston Settlement, Massachusetts Bay Colony??. Died 7 Nov. 1706 in Wallingford, New Haven Co., Connecticut Colony. Married 20 Nov. 1660 in New London, [Connecticut] River Colony?, to Hannah Morgan
This appears to be his house.
Payne-Joyce gives his death as 12 Dec.
Other sources give birth in Wallingford, CT but Wallingfrd was not settled until 1667 (then known as "East River" or "New Haven Village", settled from New Haven which itself was not settled until 1638). James Savage has that he was of New London and removed to Wallingford sometime after 1666, However New London itself was not settled (and known as Pequot unitl 1658) until 1646. Since his father was in Mass. until at least 1637, I think its safe to say he was born in Boston. Correction: If there were two Robert Royce's, then it would seem Nehemiah was born in Long Sutton, Somerset, England

My 10th Great Grandfather, Ens. Nathaniel Royce
Born 1 Apr. 1639 in either Boston Settlement, Massachusetts Bay Colony OR Cupheag, New Haven Colony. Died 8 Feb. 1735/6 in Wallingford, Connecticut Colony. m. 1st 27 Oct. 1673 to Esther Moss (d. 19 Jun. 1677). Married 2nd 21 Apr. 1681 in Wallingford, Connecticut Colony to Sarah Lothrop/Lathrop. Other sources give bd as 24 Apr. 1647 in Wallingford and dd as 8 Feb. 1726/27 in Wallingford. Mrs. Hall agrees with first two marriages, gives that the third was on 24 Aug 1707 to a Hannah Farnham, and that Abigail was the widow Hays, not Hoyt.
Savage has his baptismal date as 24 Mar. 1639 which is what Pane-Joyce gives as birth date. Pane-Joyce also agrees with 7 Feb 1726 death date and gives that he removed to Wallingford before 1674.
Other sources give birth place as Wallingford, CT but Wallingfrd was not settled until 1667 (then known as "East River" or "New Haven Village", settled from New Haven which itself was not settled until 1638). James Savage has that he was of New London and removed to Wallingford before 1669, Though New London was not settled until 1646 (and was known as Pequot until 1658). Given his fathers information above he was probaly born in either Boston, Massachusetts Bay or Cupheag, New Haven (later known as Stratford, Connecticut).
Abigail Hoyt (nee Cook) was a captive in Canada before her marriage to Nathaniel. (Deerfield incident, 29 Feb 1704)
