THE CAR PICTURE

A non-switching railway system, with an "auto-car" forming an advanced vehicle, can be used to transport passengers or freight automatically simply by dialing a number. No driver needs steer, it is highly efficient, and it is free from scheduling restraints.

The main difference between the proposed system and a conventional railway is that there is no railway switching at a branch. It does not need switching or waiting to change path, thus enabling the auto-car to pass branches continuously at high speed in each direction. The choice of path at a branch would be made with a mechanism and a computer in each car -- the car would move to its destination automatically. The rail itself is fixed.

This system can be manufactured using current technology.

Characteristics and advantages of such a system are:

1.A car is independent of other cars, and can go to any destination, without marshalling or cues --there is less involved in collection and distribution of passengers and freight.

2.It is auto-seeking for optimum route and speed, without driver intervention and without branch control. Each car goes to its destination directly with no station changes needed.

3.The car can be in use all day long, going to various destinations without a vacant seat wasted or a vacant car going back to its point of origin, and without many cars to park. These factors lead to significant savings of space and energy, bringing about higher traffic capacity.

4.It is easier to construct the system due to its light load and narrow gauge, the road bed is suited to prefabrication and overhead alignment, meaning less interference with existing roads and buildings.

The system allows for large spans, fewer bridge pillars, easier design and less costly building for a curved route, or in a complicated or hilly region.

The system can be developed into a smaller scale freight transportation net-work, especially for daily necessities.

5.It reduces land-use impacts because it employs pillars that support the system, resulting in less disturbance to natural ecological systems, and less farm land overtaken by paving.
