Cerebus the Aardvark
If you've never heard of Cerebus the Aardvark, frankly I'm not surprised. I do think it's a shame though that such a great book is passed up for such mediocre stories as "X-men", or "Spawn", the big sellers these days. So, I've taken it upon myself to attempt to inform everyone I can about Cerebus, and hopefully, get some new readers and collectors. It's truely has one of the most complex stories, and overall one of the best currently running epics that can be found in the world of comics. Like many others who have posted pages about Cerebus, I will try my luck at it, and see what happens. I'll start with the overall story...
Cerebus's beginnings are somewhat of a joke. The writer and artist, Dave Sim, started Cerebus as a parody of Barry-Windsor Smith's early issues of "Conan the Barbarian", but based on the funny idea of a funny animal in the world of humans, much like Marvel's "Howard the Duck". But, this parody started to become more, and by issue 26, the parody was much more complex, as was the story. Issue 26 marked the beginning of Sim's first real Cerebus epic, "High Society", in which Cerebus get's mixed into the world of politics and becomes Prime Minister. After this story, you begin to see a pattern forming by which the Cerebus story follows; Cerebus gains power, then becomes too powerful, and loses it all. It's definitely an ongoing theme throughout Sim's work. It became more evident in the next story, "Church & State", where Cerebus becomes pope. This huge, 5 year project brought up another issue and realization about Cerebus; he's not a good guy. He's manipulative, greedy, and downright mean, but somehow you end up loving him, no matter how much money he steals from the poor, or how many
old people he throws off buildings. After the 60 issue marathon of C&S, SIm took a bit of a break and started writing shorter stories that only took him a year. THe first of these was "Melmoth", followed by "Jaka's Story", "Flight", "Women", "Reads", and most recently "Guys". Individually, that means he's somewhere around 220, of a 300 issue series scheduled to end in 5 or six years. That's right, after 300 issues, and almost 25 years of writing Cerebus, Dave is going to end it
with the death of the title Character, Cerebus....
