How It All Began
Ms. Lesley Sue Gore was born on May 2, 1946 in Brooklyn New York. The first child of Leo. Leo and his wife Ronny were the owners of a swimwear company, changed the family name back to their original Russian name {Gore}. Goldstein was the family's adopted name when they came to america. Around the time that Lesley was in kindergarten the family moved to Teaneck, NJ until their new home was ready. At a very early age Leo and Ronny could see Lesley's love for music. Lesley was to young to read but she knew what she was listening to bye the color of her parents collection of 45. She knew all the words. Her father would stand her up on the cocktail table and she'd sing for 20 minutes at a time. Lesley was four when her brother Michael was born. Her parents bought a big upright piano, Lesley recalls spending most of her childhood singing, writing music, and listening to music. As Lesley grew up her talent continued to grow. she would sing at summer camp talent shows and in school. The first time Lesley was paid for her singing was at a Italian wedding, Her cousin Allan was visiting one afternoon and he got a call from the band leader saying the lead singer was sick and could not make the wedding. Allan asked Lesley's father if she could come along and sing a few songs. "if she finishes her homework" Lesley's father answered. 15 year old Lesley made five or ten dollars and had her first real experence in front of a audience, she learned alot from that. Allan also helped Lesley find her way to Mercury Records. Allan's brother Howard managed a boxer whoses agent was Joe Glaser. Lesley recorded some demos with her vocal coach, howard brought them to Glaer. He was impressed enough to play them for the chief of Mercury Irving Green . The label president turned Lesley to his A&R head Quincy Jones. Lesley began singing with Allan's band at New York's Prince George hotel. It just happened that one night Quincy Jones was there because the band was trying to get a record contract. Lesley got up and sang a few songs and that was it. Well about a week later Lesley got a call from Quincy asking if she'd like to come in. Lesley went needless to say. They spent a few hours playing at the piano and all. Ouincy asked if she'd record four sides, Lesley jumped at the chance. We everyone pretty much knows this famous story. They found the song "It's My Party" Quincy rushed Lesley to record it and at the time she didn't see why. Years Later Lesley found out the reason for Quincy's hurry. Another singer had just recorded it so he wanted to get it out there soon befor someone else got the hit. Quincy sent out the song to radio stations acrossed the country and don't you know within a month it was the number one song in the country. That was Lesley's big breack. The song that caused such a commotion had a follow up. "Judy's Trun To Cry" Lesley thought that having a follow-up song was not a cool thing at the time but, it did good. It made it to the number 5 spot on the music charts. Leley had over a dozen chart topers.
