A Tribute to...

Mother Teresa passed away on 6th September 1997. The world loses yet another....

I specially devote this page to her. She was a woman whom I had come to know only by name, whether by word of mouth or through the reading of newspapers. I had only known her to be a gracious nun who goes around visiting the poor, the hungry and the sick. Sadly, I've never known much else about her til her death which took me in shock when I heard it over the radio on Saturday morning. Afterwhich, the newspapers and the internet carried articles about her life and her deeds. Only then did I come to really know what she had been doing all this while. I didn't even know that she had been ill for the past 4 years, battling death, until I read the articles about her. But still, I felt sad. I might not have really known her, but to me, she represented the goodness that one can have, the purity of love. She taught the world to love, and to her, loving meant doing God's will. She could have led a simple middle-class life in India, but she chose to go beneath all wealth and luxury of life to help the other more needy people in the world who has come to look upon her as their saviour, their Mother. Indeed, she loved them all like a mother would, be they lepers or sinners...she showed them the same love.

Initially I was quite outraged by the fact that her death was so overshadowed by Princess Diana's death. Agreed, Princess Diana's death was tragic given the circumstances which it all took place but truly, the culprits can only be us, we love reading about her and in the end, "curiousity kills the cat"... But later, I agreed that there wasn't a need to publicize extensively about Mother Teresa's death. Human beings are wierd. We only start to treasure something only when we lose it, we tend to take everything for granted. She had wanted to leave in her own quiet way, just as she had always been, quiet and humble in all her deeds. When she won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985, she said "I am unworthy...". To her, she ascribes all credit to only one and that is GOD, who has done great things through her. The world might have lost her physically, but surely all hope isn't lost? Her death might not mean the End but perhaps the Beginning of more good things to come. I'm sure she will continue praying for us as she has always been...
