Metallica was formed during the year of 1981, the band then consisted of James Hetfield, Rythym Guitar and Vocals, Lars Ulrich, Percussion, Ron McGovney, Bass Guitar, and Dave Mustaine, Lead Guitar. Later in the year of '81 McGovney was dismissed as the Bassist and replaced by the "Major Rager"Cliff Burton. Dave Mustaine, the Lead Guitarist, was also replaced by Kirk Hammett.
The Band was enjoying three albums worth of touring when a sudden tragedy took the life of their bassist, Cliff Burton. They knew they could not disappoint their fans and Cliff's Go-For-It attitude by quitting, so they had to find a new bassist. The choice of who to hire was a very easy decision once they discovered the talent of the crazy Jason Newsted .
