Mary's Homepage

Hello and welcome to my homepage!

I am a 19-year-old college sophomore at Eastern Mennonite Univeristy. Some things I dig ~ film music, cats, computers, crafts, The Monkees, and more. Hope you enjoy your stay at (one of) my homes on the web. ;-)

Music!

I love music; some of my favorite kinds are film scores, oldies, pop/rock, and classical.

Film music is a unique genre that blends classical, easy listening, jazz.... actually it's impossible to compare it with other types, because the variety is endless! It conveys a broad range of emotions, due in part to the fact that it is written for a given story. A well-written film score should tell a story in itself, when played alone. At the same time, it must blend with the movie so well that it enhances the scenes of the movie. Needless to say, this is no easy task! When it is achieved, however, the effect is like nothing else! Film scores have often been ignored by the majority of the public, although recently the "Titanic" score (written by James Horner) received a good response - reaching the Top Ten Best-Selling Albums as "Star Wars" did some 20 years ago.

My favorite film music composers are James Horner, John Williams, and Danny Elfman. Each brings unique qualities to his work and all three have written some of the best scores of their generation. Of course, there are many more film composers that I admire and respect ~ I regard many of these men and women as musical genuises, who do not receive the recognition they deserve. I encourage you to give film music a try!

Some of my favorite scores: Star Wars (Williams), Edward Scissorhands (Elfman), Legends of the Fall (Horner), Legend (Goldsmith), etc.
