M was the creation of Robin Scott, taking the name from the signs on the streets of Paris which indicate the entrance to the Metro. In 1979 they fused New-wave punk and Euro-disco, creating a new sound.
With Scott's unique monotone vocal style and Brigit Novik's femme-botic backing vocals, M conjured up their fantastic hit single "Pop Muzik".
However, M were what you might label as a "One Hit Wonder" in commercial terms, whose offerings soon faded from the music world. They did produce many other fine recordings though, which slipped by unheard and under-rated.
Echoes of M's music can be heard in music groups of today, such as Pulp, The Divine Comedy and Stereolab.
Even though M no longer exhists, the Pop Muzik lives on. In fact, "Pop Muzik" can be found on just about every otherretro-compilation CD these days. And with all of M's albums recently remastered on CD for the first time and a strong internet fanbase, M's music is still very much alive.
