R.E.M. It
came from Athens. It started out one night in an abandoned
church in Athens. It was a birthday party for Kathleen O'brien.
She asked Michael to bring the rest of the band to the
party. He wasn't too sure about it. He didn't feel the
band had all of the songs down yet. But, eventually she persuaded
him to do so. They went under the name "Twisted Kites"
It was a huge party. It was estimated by a highly trained
statistician that, the drunk guy that passed out in the corner,
that over 500 people attended. The crowd loved the band.
They were going to be a huge local band it looked like.
Well, it became more than that. They became a huge
band known around the world.
My
story on R.E.M. ~ The first time I heard R.E.M. and realized
who it was they were playing Losing My Religion on the radio.
I really liked the song but had a love/hate thing going
for it. I wasn't too fond of it because everybody else liked
it. I can't stand being like everyone else so I acted like
I didn't like it. Well, a few years passed and then the
band came out with Monster. I was captivated by tounge, so I
bought the album. I listened to it over and over and over
and found it was an album in which I never got sick of. Few
bands are like that. So I bought another and another. Then
I was addicted. But the song that has always held my attention
was Man On The Moon. I've really never put much thought
into what the lyrics mean, but, I seldomly care what lyrics mean.
Stipe's voice in that song is at it's melodically rich
peak there but I don't think it will ever come down from that
peak either. I've yet to go to one of there concerts. But,
I'm impatiently waiting for the next tour.
Thoughts
on Bill moving on ~ Bill quitting shocked me quite a bit.
I am a wee bit depressed by it, but not overwhelmed. Bill
meant something to me being a drummer myself. I always
practiced pilgrimage. That's my favorite of his drumming.
But, no member of a band is essential to a band. I
like the three legged dog theory that's been floating around
the world. I'll miss Bill, and I'll miss the old sound
of R.E.M. But, I'm looking forward to what they have in
the future.
