Visual Purple band members say recording an album can really take a lot out of you.  The band's debut release has been finished for months.  But after a short bread, the band - which includes Clay Emberson on guitar, Neal Clevenger on bass and Kelly Janzen on vocals and drums - is just getting around to promoting it.

"We're just gonna take it one step at a time," says Clevenger.  "If we gotta stop to put bandages on our feet or something, we'll take the time to wrap them."   Besides, what's the rush?  "We're here to stay," says Emberson.   "It's not a matter of time, like 'Boy, if we don't get it out tomorrow, we're gonna get burned out.' "

The disc concentrates on rock rhythms and textures, with Janzen's fluid baritone draped over somber, sometimes psychedelic backdrops.  It's rock 'n' roll inspired by varying influences.  Clevenger, 29, is the band's metal influence, Janzen, 33, is the "early Zeppelin" influence.  And Emberson, who is "over 30", is into the Beatles, the Yardbirds and Cream.  "Alot of rhythm and blues," Emberson says.  "My guitar playing hasn't really changed in the last 50 years."  Janzen says the mixture of musical styles forms the band's defining sound.  "Somehow, it all fits together.  Don't ask us how."

Don't ask him about the band he used to perform with, either (he calls it the "W" word, referring to that band name's first letter).  Near the end of that band's breakup, he was already focusing efforts on Visual Purple.  "We moonlighted in our own little trio while this other band was going on, because it was so much better," Janzen says.  His word with Visual Purple is ready to pay off a little.  In addition to releasing the new CD, the band has just received local corporate sponsorship from Budweiser.  Emberson jokes when asked how the deal came about.  "Well, Clay just drinks so much."  The deal allows the band to get some help promoting themselves, but it's now like the beer giant will send them on a tour - at least, not to California.  "Right now, it's limited to Sedgwick County," Emberson says.  But if the guys have their way, that will only be the beginning.

As manager, Micajah Ryan has already set goals for Visual Purple.  And goal No. 1 is to become "very, very popular in Wichita," he says.

                    "Today, Wichita," Janzen sighs.

"Tomorrow, Clearwater,"  Emberson says, in reference to his hometown.  "All three of us could spread out and pass a football through that town," Janzen says with a laugh.  But it won't matter where they perform.  "The bottom line is, when you like to play, you like to play," says Clevenger.  "If you're playing in front of five people, you still have five people in front of you, and you still have five chances."  And , just maybe, those five people will tell five more people, and on and on and on.  "We're gonna throw a snowball and hope it turns into an avalanche," Janzen says.

There was supposed to be a counter here at the bottom but I cant seem to get the damn thing working.  Maybe I will write a song about it.
