It's all about individuality, non-conformity and being who you are. In today's society there is a look we must achieve, there is a social status we must all aspire to, and there is a standard of normalacy that we all must maintain. Why? Because any deviation from the norm is seen as rebellious, dangerous, frightening, and "uncool". People who dress differently are labeled as freaks. So what if I wear my hair in weird pigtails and have a lot of funky bracelets and rings? So what if I wear camouflage, or odd clothing, or god-forbid, black? Does that mean I'm doing drugs? Does that mean I worship Satan? Does it mean that I'm going to blow up my school or shoot someone? No. It doesn't. I am a very friendly person. I have friends of all ages, all styles, all social classes. Did you know that the majority of my friends who do drink or do drugs or whatever are the jock-like upperclass boys who you would think are nice young men if you met them on the street? Did you know that my friend who shaves her head or dies her little mohawk rainbow colors and wears enough chains and jewelry to put Mr. T to shame never does any of that stuff, but you would talk about her as if she were a drug dealer, because we as a society are absolutely obsessed with appearances. Whenever we meet someone we instantly appraise them in our mind. We form an opinion of people we've seen, or just met based on their apppearances. Now, I'm not what most people would call a "freak", but I am different. I don't care what people think of the way I dress or if they think I'm a little crazy (which most of my friends say anyway). And I don't care what people think about ME, if they're making their judgement based on something as superficial as my eye makeup! It is time to let go of these snobby ideas of looking down on people because of their appearances and reshape our culture.
