Red Snapper
David
Ayers, Guitar. Ali Friend, Bass.
Richard Thair, Drums.
Red Snapper
is a British group, who works with mostly acoustic instruments,
with composition
principals from electronic dance music.
Red Snapper
is put together by Richard Thair, who at that moment played drums by The
Aloof.
He steals
Friend and Ayers form the band from Beth Orton (Chemical
Brothers) and Heather Nova.
The idea is
a couple of masters from techno and drum and bass, like repeating,
working with
loops and the articulation on the groove, played by real instruments.
Other influences
are dub, surf, soundtracks, and the adventurous jazz
from Charles
Mingus and Roland Kirk.
The group
records a couple of EP's, collected on the album Reeled and Skinned.
Hot Flush
enjoys a bit of interest to the crowd 'cuz of a remix
from Andrew
Weatherall (Sabres of Paradise).
Guest Sax player
Alan Riding (8Up, obO), who, after a while, is being replaced by Ollie
Moore.
Prince Blimey,
the actually debut is much better compared to the first album, which is
kind of empty.
Ayers' guitar
is being put through effects heavily, Thair hits more Drum and Bass style
at the moment and the compositions are more improved. Red Snapper is the
Weather Report for the Post-Techno generation, as the rumours say.
In '96 the
band makes a lot of impression on stage, in the clubs and on the north
sea jazz festival.
the band is
there, only without Moore but with trumpet player Byron Wallen and the
out of the Drum and Bass scene famous MC Det. Loopa Scoopa turns out to
be a mini album which contains remixes form Prince Blimey, remixed by DJ
Food, Mr. Scruff and John McEntire from Tortoise.
