Slow Children Squared is one guy with a horrible voice and a cheap, out of tune guitar playing sad songs (not always sad, but usually). But for some reason, people really like the album.
The album is called Toward Wheeling and it's available for $3 from M8BR. Their are soundfiles available in the M8BR Catalog.
Here's a review of Toward Wheeling from Gajoob Magazine:
"Slow Children Squared is a one man project from Jason Erb, who hails from the northeastern side of Pennsylvania, a good place to be thoughtful. His solo recording is filled with tunes that crawl through the dry wasteland of life, love and even his own vocal quality, as in the opener "I Can't Sing." In the liner notes Jason states that he wasn't worried about sound quality, tuning the guitar or adding a variety of instruments to flesh out the tunes, I guess he succeeded in that arena. The tunes are simply done--guitar and vocals, a backwards guitar solo here and there, extra vocals added from time to time, but mostly solo. If you want to hear barebones music, this is a good place to look. Despite the generally dreary outlook and feel of the music, I liked a lot of what I heard. There is an unexpected twist of lyrics and nicely turned phrases. I do have a slight gripe with Slow Children Squared, or a question. Why record these songs with a "cheap 4 track?" (as is noted on the cover). The sparse feel of the songs could have been served much better with a little more attention to levels and mic placement. What lyrics I heard I liked, I wish more of them were audible. Perhaps the purpose of the tape is to whet the appetite for more fleshed-out versions of these songs. I know I want to hear more, so on that level it succeeds. (review by Kevin Slick)
Note: Obviously Kevin doesn't know about my other band,Velcro Mary. Some of these songs can be found in their "fleshed-out" versions on various Velcro Mary releases, hence the sparse feel of the SC2 album.
How to make your very own Slow Children Squared T-shirt:
1. Get a t-shirt. Get a blank white one if you can. If not, whatever you can scrape up will do.
2. Get a permanent black marker.
3. If there is already writing or pictures on the shirt (see step 1), cross it out using the marker. You may have to scribble quite a bit for larger designs.
4. Somewhere on the shirt write "Slow Kids Of The World Unite".
5. Wear the shirt with pride and be the envy of all your friends.
