Through the Looking Glass

Welcome to The Mad Hatter's Web page. Feel free to browse and download. And keep coming

back, I'll be adding features and links on a regular basis.

A picture of me, in my birthday suit. Or so the file description claimed when this picture was uploaded to a BBS I was running, back in 1992. With some trepidation I viewed the file, and saw this. After I picked myself up off the floor I "adopted" it.

So here it is folks - the only authorized nude picture of The Mad Hatter!

As to the name - I'm a big fan of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll. I'd heartily recommend both books to children of all ages.

And a word of explanation - the term "Mad as a hatter" has a historical basis. For a long time the damage that continued exposure to certain metals (mercury being the biggest culprit) could do the the human body was an unknown. Mercury was used in felting hats, and as a metabolic poison slowly killed hatters. The poisoning caused changes in personality and hatters gained a reputation for being VERY strange.

Contempory thought was that there was something about the trade that made otherwise normal people into weirdos, and they were right. But rather than it being the profession itself, it was the poisons used in it.
