Wysinger Family out of Benoit, MS
We are a proud people that love our family members very deeply. Cousins are like sisters and brothers. Our foreparents helped to raise the children of their siblings. We are building a strong unit to carry on the Wysinger legacy! Now, let me tell the story of John Wysinger's youngest son. Newett Wysinger was born to John and Etna Wysinger on September 20,1863 in Alabama. At some point the family move to Mississippi. In time, he met and later married Laura White. She was the first born of Margaret White, but was raised by Charles and Emily White, her grandparents. Laura White was born December 10,1864 in Carroll County, MS. Newett and Laura were married in Greenville, MS on January 24,1881. Newett Wysinger kept two family bibles in which he recorded the history of his family. On Dahomey Planation, outside of Benoit, MS- the Wysingers worked and began their family. We know they had seventeen children of which eleven survived early infancy. Ten of the Wysinger children lived to adulthood. In the early 1920's, most of the Wysinger family moved to Chicago, Illinois. Newett and his wife, lived with their oldest daughter, Melvina Wysinger Heidelburg on the southside of Chicago. The family lived in close proximity of each other. Many got their start living with Aunt Mel and Uncle Ollie Heidelburg. This occurred as the family began moving North. With nine of the ten Wysinger family members in Chicago, one sister did not like the concrete sidewalks of that Northern city. Edora Wysinger Wilson eventually made her home in Huntsville, Alabama. So we have a strong contingent of Wysinger-Wilsons in Lexington,MS; Tchula, MS; Huntsville, AL; and Chicago, IL. Aunt Mel and Uncle Ollie owned property at 4509 S. Prairie, in Chicago, IL. They raised Rafe Heidelburg. Aunt Mel also, raised Joyce Laurence Wysinger. She had at least one niece to be named after her that would be Edna Mae Toney Goss. Aunt Mel's first name is Edna. That seemed to be a family custom. Newett Wysinger, Jr. known as "Uncle Bud" had one daughter who shared the same middle as Aunt Mel, which was Annie Melvina, though her first cousins only knew her as Annie Lee. Uncle Bud use to drive a horse and wagon from which he sold coal and watermelon as the seasons came. My son, Warren tells a splendid story about he travels with Uncle Bud. Uncle Bud gave nearly everyone a nickname, that was his specialty. Aunt Emma or "Sister Em" as she was called, was quite the cook. Her secret recipe for pink icing was a wonder for the younger generations. However, everyone loved her home-made dinner rolls. Good Sunday mealtime eating! She raised Joyce McCray McGary. Aunt Emma nicknamed me Cutie. She was one of my closest Aunts. The other was Joyce's mother Aunt Rachel. Aunt Emma was second in line, and was probably named for Big Mama's grandmother Emily, and her aunt Adaline. Aunt Emma was named Emmaline.
