The World of Infographics

Information graphics in newspapers, magazines and on-line

This site looks at new information graphics infographic designers and also what makes a good information graphic.
I will also be looking at all aspects of chart, diagramatic design and maps.

Diagrams For Newspapers

Informational graphic is an extremely broad term. It can mean a diagram, a graph, or a map. They have been used in newspapers for very many years and even pre-date photographs but it was with the invention of the Apple Mac. in the 80?s when infographics began to take on a whole new meaning. No more painstaking hand drawn graphics in mainly mono-tone now with modern printing and design practices it was possible to do a far greater amount of and more slick graphics than ever before.
In America Infographics were influenced largely by an English designer called Nigel Holmes (http://www.ted.com/info/holmes.html ) at Time magazine who had himself been influenced by the late and great Peter Sullivan.
These days infographics are growing in in both use and variety. However with these new developments come the need to discipline oneself as not to over use colour or unnecessary illustration on an infographic. One of the most successful and most talented Diagrammatic designers is John Grimwade (http://www.ted.com/info/grimwade.html) began his career at The Sunday Times in England and now works for Cond Nast Traveller (US edition) and Popular Science amongst others.

The Final Frontier? Where Infographics Are Going

Things are changing in the world of infographics from the page to the computer screen from 2D to 3D and even 4D Graphics.
Thanks to people like Phil West who ran a course at Newcastle College in the North of England the future is a bright one. His course is like no other in the world it gives a student skills not only infographic but also in page layout and journalism.
There is also a new breed of infographic designers using animated graphics of a very high standard, exapmles of these can be seen through news broadcasters such as CNN and the BBC.
