Maison Ikkoku-Kan
Maison Ikkoku was a popular Japanese Manga which ran for 15 volumes in 4 years and went on to become Japan's Most touching animated television romantic comedy-drama airing from 1984 to 1987. In all the series had produced 96 TV episodes, 14 Manga compilation Volumes, a Movie, and a Live action "Dorama" film. In Japan it was one of the most touching and realistic Anime series of all time.
Maison Ikkoku was originally created by genius Japanese Mangaka Rumiko Takahashi, who also created such fine works as Ranma 1/2, One Pound Gospel, and Urusei Yatsura. Though Maison Ikkoku is usually overlooked by Rumiko Fans, because most claim "Who want's to see a guy get into college when they can see Lum shock ataru with lightning bolts and Ranma punch people in the face". Which is really an understatement about Maison Ikkoku, who's Lovable characters, great story, hilarious situations, and touching moments make Maison Ikkoku Rumiko Takahashi's most character inovolved and relistic Manga.
The impact the Anime had on japan didn't seem to happen in North America though. The Manga seemed to sell well and finished it's run, After the release of seventeen volumes VIZ. Inc. canceled the Dubbed version of the show and went Subtitle only. Later, VIZ came to a screeching halt at volume 25 and stopped releasing volumes, Then they announced that they would not Release the Maison Ikkoku Anime series on DVD, stating that the DVD's would have to sell 100,000 units at release to make a profit. That, in the Anime world, is a huge amount. I am hoping VIZ. Inc. will get their act together and release the rest of the Maison Ikkoku Anime series.
The series follows young Ronin student Yasuka Godai and his attempts to reach hopes and dreams. He wishes one day that he'll be able to pass the college entrance exams and win the heart of his apartment manager, Kyoko Ontinashi. He lives in a Run down apartment building called Maison Ikkoku where he spends his days trying to study. The other tenants of Maison Ikkoku don't make that too easy on him, while they throw parties in his room every night, drinking heavily and running on his desk. Though these people are his friends, Kyoko is the only one who looks out for his well being and believes he can pass the test and enter college.
Godai and Kyoko both have feelings for each other, but can never seem to get them out in the open. Godai doesn't say anything because he is a tenant and she is the manager, and she is almost ten years older than him. Kyoko keeps quiet because of the age difference as well, and because she was recently married and her husband "Soichiro" whom she named her dog after, died six months after their wedding. Because she has only happy memories of Soichiro, she can't ever seem to let go.
