FLVT 201, FLVT 202

FLVT 201 is the first and FLVT 202 is the second of two intermediate courses for heritage language speakers who are advanced in listening comprehension and conversational competencies but are intermediate in reading and writing. Emphasis is placed on developing reading, writing competencies, vocabulary expansion, and cultural awareness.


FLVT 201 strengthens and broadens content areas and basic functions in reading and writing. In reading, students will begin with short informational texts and then progress to more difficult passages, which are designed to expand vocabulary and cultural awareness. In writing, they will write short lecture notes, messages, postcards, personal letters, summaries, and short articles.

FLVT 201 will focus on the following topics:

Vietnam-the land and the people
Vietnamese language
Major holidays
Daily life
Food and Drinks
Transportation

FLVT 202 further broadens content areas and basic functions in reading and writing. In reading, students will start with content-based texts and then progress to more complex passages. In writing, they will write long articles, letters to the editor, editorial letters, commentaries, and essays.


FLVT 202 will focus on the following topics:

Standard Vietnamese
Public school system
Health care system
Banking system
Market-oriented economy
Course Objectives
Requirements Reference Grammar Books

Required:
Bui Duc Tinh (1995). Van Pham Viet Nam. Garden Grove, CA: Tu Quynh Printing House.
This book is written in Vietnamese.

Optional:
Laurence C. Thompson (1987). A Vietnamese Reference Grammar. Honolulu, HI: University of Hawaii Press.
This book is written in English.

Lab Visits

A lab pass is required in order to use the Language Lab H-325.

Twelve 30-minute lab visits throughout the semester are also required.
