Hello and welcome!
You've found "range: magazine" -- the mouth piece on which range is centered. So, what is range exactly? Well, that's a hard one to pin down. Partly because my idea of it keeps changing and partly because frankly, I haven't yet hit on the format that works and really "clicks" with an audience yet.
Who am I?
I'm a "refugee" from corporate America, having left more or less voluntarily after years of masquerading as a "salary man". I left mostly because I couldn't take it anymore. Literally, it was beginning to effect my health. So, if you follow my meaning, at the point of departure, I was almost solely running away from something I knew to be bad for me and with little idea of what I was running towards.
But then, after quite a few months doing very little except staying home with the kiddos, a funny thing began to happen: I started remembering what it used to be like to be me. What I felt like and the things I enjoyed doing when I did things because I wanted to do them rather than to make a buck or to pay the rent. For me, that meant re-engaging the artistic side of me and allowing the analytic side to once more submerge into a sumissive state.
So now, that's all well and good. Life is good now. And yeah, it could always be better. As a family, we're still streamlining and simplifying. Trying to figure out what things are important to us and which ones are superfluous. But what we're finding out along the way is that there aren't many guideposts. While I'm sure there are many folks on similar journeys and I've been fortunate to meet more than a few, its not like you see them on every street corner or in the grocery store check out line. And since our chosen path really is different in some significant ways from anyone else I've met thus far, its still often hard to get a "reality check".
For instance, I mentioned simplifying above. It certainly plays a role in what we're about. But its far from being the central element in our lives like it seems to be for everyone I've run across into simplicity. No, instead, the key player in our lives is artistic expression in some form, primarily of the performing arts though I personally favor photography and writing. So, for us, the journey revolves around structuring our lives in such a way that they support our artistry. Simplicity plays a role within that, but only to the point where it enhances the art, not to the point where it encumbers it.
Here is my central idea for range:
My thought is that there must be more families like ours out there. People looking to break out of the expected and into a lifestyle that facillitates whatever they happen to be about -- in our case, art. What I'm looking to do with range is form a community that can exchange ideas, suggestions, and frustrations. That can encourage each other and support each other's quest for a lifestyle that benefits their desires rather than squashes them. At the same time, I'm using range to showcase some of my own artistic expressions as well as that of others. I do this because for me, in looking at other people's outcome I find the enthusiasm to continue my own search. Perhaps what I'm looking for may be entirely different from what they have found to work for them, but I they've found something that they've found to work, then I'm that much more encourage that there is something out there for me as well.
So, join on in...
The water's fine! Let us hear from you and what your lives are about. Share with us some of your successes or even failures. If range happens to be a good forum for whatever turns your crank, share that with us too. For more submission information, go to range submissions.
