Cemetery Walking

Historical perspective of Cemetery Walking

Why????? The reasoning behind Cemetery Walking.

Without a doubt, the most asked question I receive about Cemetery Walking is "Why do you do it?" The answer is quite simply, CURIOSITY. I actually started into this when going to cemeteries looking for relatives while doing genealogy research. I started noticing more and more how interesting some of the "grave" markers {or "tombstones" if you prefer} were. At least, when you stop and actually take the time to read them.

My husband likes to hunt, fish and camp. This generally makes out of the way areas more available to me. You might be surprised as to how many small community type cemeteries you will locate on old country farm to market roads. Many times you will find cemeteries for communities and towns which no longer exist. Also, my husband is retired USAF and that led to a lot of moving around for the 20 years he was in. This too made a lot of places and areas available.

Like Deadwood, South Dakota. Where Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane went down in history during the Blackhills Gold Rush days. While we were stationed in California, we used to stop and see things and places along the way, when we were coming home to Texas for a visit. Tombstone, Arizona. Lincoln, New Mexico. Waco, Texas. For most people, Tombstone is a recognized place name, with the movies about Wyatt Earp and the OK Coral. But how about Lincoln, NM where William H. Bonney "Billy the Kid" is buried, and Waco, TX where there is a very old cemetery located right next to the Texas Rangers Hall Of Fame. {If you are a Texan and reading this and have never been to The Texas Ranger Hall of Fame, shame on you. You should try to go see it when you can, it is a great place to instill or reinstall your pride in being a Texan.}

So, as you can see. Cemetery walking has an interesting historical reference as well, but I don't just go looking for the famous and infamous. I find there are lots of interesting stories that are generated by different sources at the old out of the way community cemeteries as well. So here I plan to present some small tours of some of the cemeteries I have "Walked" and I hope it will inspire a little curiosity in you as well.

The remainder of this page is still under construction. Please come back at a later date and hopefully I will have been able to get some of the pagers set up. Thanks for visiting and reading my page.
