ENTERTHEGALLERY
Welcome to ZAHRED'S Gallery of Art and Fiction Fantastique, showcasing the work of James William Hjort. Weird Fantasy in the vein of Clark Ashton Smith and H.P.Lovecraft. Graphics inspired through the years by Maxfield Parrish, dante, Howard Pyle and lesser known, or sometimes forgotten greats like Syme, Finlay, Max, and Beardsley.
'Tis a sad tale but true, there will be no more ink dripping from the pen of Lovecraft or Smith, no new translations by Burton or intricate depictions of Arthurian legends by Pyle. We can but appreciate what has gone before, absorb it into our being and either ignore it, or let it linger like incenses to refresh work of our own. More, I hope, choose the latter.
This, therefore, is the initial approach to the precipice. How far we shall venture, plummet or soar, remains to be seen. The hands of Boyd Pearson are upon my back and the Hounds of Tindalous snap at the thin flesh above my heels. -J.W.H.
Much of the work on these pages has seen prior publication thanks to Paul Ganley's Weirdbook Press.
Several of the black and white line artpieces, moreover, have been enhanced by shading and forms of colourizaton. Four fantasy tales, are herein presented, with minor updates and emendations. The last tale, DEATH OF THE SORCERER,written circa 1976, and orignially slated for Arkham House, saw first publication in "The Sorcerer's Apprenticices: New Tales in the Traditiion of Clark Ashton Smith" Ed. James Ambuehl/Ron Shiflet... email: [email protected]. I am revising it as I have the time. So what you read today may be new tomorrow. CHECK OUT MY NEW PAINTING "Adramas" for the story.
