INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Lake Livingston (Trinity, Polk, San Jacinto and Walker Counties, Texas) -- in that rich biological meeting ground known as the Big Thicket of Texas. On this site i hope to provide four things: first a guide to locations where the fauna of the county may be observed; a compendium of the species in several major groups of animals that have been found in the county; a series of links for folks wishing to find additional information on the fauna and flora of the county; and as complete a listing as possible of all the publications dealing with the fauna and flora of Trinity County for those wishing to do further research.
Any publication that deals with a dynamic resource is in itself dynamic. This is not a final document now and never will be. The author/webmaster hopes that people who find things different than those listed here will contact him and provide details of identity, location, date and time. Further, rare species are coded in the listings, and it is desired that full details, photographs and recordings be made on the spot in order to help document these species. In the case of birds, documentation of this sort should be provided to the Texas Bird Records Committee, c/o Mark Lockwood, Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, 4200 Smith School Road, Austin, Texas 77844. Also, any species not found on these lists and considered rare overall in the state of Texas should be documented in this fashion as well. Thanks for your help on this.
WHAT'S SPECIAL ABOUT LAKE LIVINGSTON?
A WORD ABOUT BIRDING, BIRDS, AND BIRDERS (AND HERPERS FOR THAT MATTER)
I am putting this site together with some trepidation. I have witnessed birders and herpers perpetrate some ugly things for the list or the collection. It's my own belief that the purely selfish angles of birding and herping are of an order of magnitude greater danger to our fauna than any other factor (including habitat loss -- because some habitat loss is directly tied to injudicious actions by "well-meaning" people). Some understanding of landowner concerns are necessary in order to safeguard the fauna of our area, which is a very special but delicate wildlife zone. Bad choices of words, and disrespect for fences have caused great injury to the wildlife of our area. Ranchers and farmers are under enough strain and pressure to survive without someone telling them what to do and how to do it (as in the federal or state government), and they never take kindly to suggestion. Thankfully, many of them are finding their own path to conservation, and even preservation, but they have livelihood to protect and "outside" environmental interests pose a real threat. So, in trade for providing this location guide to the fauna of Trinity County i'm begging of all visitors several things: first, never use the phrase "endangered species" when speaking to a local; never, ever enter property for which you don't have specific permission (despite how rare or how far away that bird is; or how many years you've tried to find that herp); and please never divulge in public forum places i may take you to see certain species (this is one of the most underestimated things in all of birding -- "common" knowledge of locations of rare animals immediately endangers them; only public and/or safe locations are in this online guide; i often guide people to other specific locations for rarities that are not listed here; never underestimate the lengths to which someone will go to rid themselves of endangered species, nor what a kid will do to get an eagle feather for his hat). So please, please be judicious, knowing that once info gets out, even among conservation-conscious birders, it's only a degree or two from becoming "public info". Thanks for respecting this. I hope i've made it clear that i will no longer guide to spots for rarities should this plea be ignored.
