ABOUT JAIN COMMUNITY :
Jains are the followers of the oldest living religion - Jainism. They are mainly in India and also some other countries like Germany, U.K., U.S.A., Canada, Kenya, Nepal etc.
In India, Jainism is being followed by various types of people, speaking various languages and by different racial groups. There are large number of farmers who are traditional followers of Jainism. Next is the business community which is mainly from Rajasthan and Gujarat. In East India, and also in other parts of India, there are some nomadic tribes who follow Jainism. Some traditional craftsman communities are also followers of Jainism. This fact shows that Jainism is a religion for all.
Jains are strictly vegetarian. They follow Ahimsa throughout their life. They do not kill or cause to kill any living being. However, this religion permits the followers violence in defence of nation, community and family. That is why there are many Jains in Indian military and police forces.
Jains have done a tremendous job in building ancient and modern India. Bharat, the elder son of First Teerthankar "Rishabhdev" was the first universal monarch. Bharat, the original name of India was named after him. The first historical emperor of India Chandragupta was also a follower of Jainism. He defeated the army of Greek Emperor Alexander the Great. Chandragupta built a united India. His son Bindusar, grandson Ashok were also followers of Jainism. Kunal, son of Ashok and Samprati, grandson of Ashok were also followers of Jainism. Under the dynasty of these all emperors, Jainism flourished all over India.
In medieval India, Jain community gave many regional kings. Some of them were - Emperor of Kaling Kharwel, Emperor of Gujarat - Kumarpal, Emperor of Karnatak - Gangraj, Emperor Amoghvarsh and many others. It is believed that Shivaji, the Great Maratha King, had a tremendous impact of Jainism on him.
But after medieval period, Jainism declined because of opposition by Vedic people. There was mass killings of Jains throughout India. In southern India thousands of Jain monks were killed. Millions of the followers were forced to change their religion. Thus Jainism became a religion of minority community.

They Built Modern India
Although Jains are in minority, they tried their best to build modern India. Mahatma Gandhi, as everybody knows, followed Jain principles to get freedom to India from British rule. But very few people know that he was a Jain from mother's side. Because of his mother, Gandhiji was in contact with Jain monks. Shrimad Rajchandraji, the great Jain philosopher was religious Guru of Gandhiji.
Lala Lajpatrai, the great freedom fighter, the pioneer of Indian Shipping industry - Seth Walchand Hirachand, Pioneer of Indian film industry - V. Shantaram, Pioneer of Indian Space Technology - Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the great Educationalist - Karmveer Bhaurao Patil (who founded hundreds of schools in rural area), Osho Rajnish - the Great Philosopher and many other great Jain people from various fields of life contributed in building modern India.
About ten thousand Jain monks are spreading Jain philosophy and Jain way of life throughout India. Jains have established a number of schools, hospitals, research institutes, charitable trusts etc. to fulfill the needs of common people.

Our only achivement is to bring all jains under one roaf
THE UNIVERSE AND THE GOD :
Jainism believes that the Universe and all its substances or entities are eternal. It has no beginning or end with respect to time. The Universe runs on its own by its own cosmic laws. All substances change or modify their forms continuously. Nothing can be destroyed or created in the Universe. There is no need of someone to create or manage the affairs of the Universe. Hence, Jainism does not believe in God as creator, survivor and destroyer of the Universe.
However, Jainism does believe in God, not as a creator, but as a perfect being. When a person destroys all his Karma, he becomes omniscient and omnipotent. He is liberated soul. He lives in perfect blissful state of Moksha. This living being is God of the Jain religion. Every living being has the potential to become a God. Hence Jains do not have one God, but Gods are innumerable and their number is continuously increasing as more living beings attain liberation.

Riddle of the Creation
The first question arises with the idea of creation is why should the God make the Universe at all ? Just because it pleased him to do so, or he felt lonely and wanted company, or he wanted to create living beings who would praise his glory and worship or he does it in sport ? Then why should it please the creator to create a world where sorrow and pain are inevitable lot of the majority of his creatures ? Why should he not make them happier ?

Speciality of Jainism
Jainism more than any other creed gives absolute religious independence and freedom to man. Nothing can intervene between the actions which we do and the fruits thereof. Once done, they become our masters and must fruitify. As my independence is great, so my responsibility is co-existensive with it. I can live as I like, but my choice is irrevocable, and I cannot escape the consequences of it. No God or his Prophet or Deputy or Beloved can interfere with human life. The soul, and it alone is directly and necessarily is responsible for what it does.
