ANIYUNTIKWALASKI

Sorry, your browser doesn't support Java(tm).

For 100,000 years the Native American cultures have existed over the continents of the Americas. From them arose the most advanced civilization to ever exist. Theirs was the most accurate calendar system the world has known. Their knowledge of stars and nature was beyond measure. However, invasion by Europeans reduced these accomplishments to bits and pieces remembered by only a few.
We remember the legacy of one of the greatest Original Inhabitants of Turtle Island (the Aniyuntikwalaski or the People of the Land of Lightning) that the European invaders attempted to destroy by the 'doctrine of discovery'. Thomas Jefferson: "...if ever we are constrained to lift the hatchet against any tribe we will never lay it down till that tribe is exterminated,..." Treaty of 1846: "...the Indians become extinct..." Their original name is the Chickamaugans. At the time of white contact three distinct groups of Cherokee were known. The Middle, Lower and Overhill. The Overhill Cherokees were different in many ways from the others. Their tradition tells of following a bending stick to the land of gandga gidi or Kentucky and the areas of the Cumberland and Tennessee River Valley. The 'Proud' priesthood people were the Lower Cherokee who had been driven into exile in the mountains of North Carolina after their 'Priests' offended the creator when they misused their power such that it touched off a centuries long war: 'Mound Builders' war. When the whites came they found ready participants for the white campaign against the 'Old' ones, the Chickamaugans. However, their assistance to the whites was rewarded by the infamous 'Trail of Tears'.

CHIEF DRAGGING CANOE
"Whole Indian Nations have melted away like snowballs in the sun before the white man's advance. They leave scarcely a name of our people except those wrongly recorded by their destroyers. Where are the Delawares? They have been reduced to a mere shadow of their former greatness. We had hoped that the white men would not be willing to travel beyond the mountains. Now that hope is gone. They have passed the mountains, and have settled upon Tsalagi (Cherokee) land. They wish to have that usurpation sanctioned by treaty. When that is gained, the same encroaching spirit will lead them upon other land of the Tsalagi(Cherokees). New cessions will be asked. Finally the whole country, which the Tsalagi (Cherokees) and their fathers have so long occupied, will be demanded, and the remnant of the Ani Yvwiya, The Real People, once so great and formidable, will be compelled to seek refuge in some distant wilderness. There they will be permitted to stay only a short while, until they again behold the advancing banners of the same greedy host. Not being able to point out any further retreat for the miserable Tsalagi (Cherokees), the extinction of the whole race will be proclaimed. Should we not therefore run all risks, and incur all consequences, rather than to submit to further loss of our country? Such treaties may be alright for men who are too old to hunt or fight. As for me, I have my young warriors about me. We will hold our land."

Chief Dragging Canoe, Chickamaugan

THE TRAGEDIES

Yahoo Falls- The story of the massacre of 110 Cherokee women and children at Yahoo Falls, Big South Fork NRRA Kentucky, has been suppressed and much misinformation has been disseminated. The conception of death as understand by Euros is one cause of this misinformation. Who Big Jake Troxell and Cornblossom were did die at Yahoo Falls but their bodies did not. Another point to understand is the inhumane warfare conducted by people like John Sevier, William Blount, Hiram Gregory and their followers. To protect their women and children from slaughter, leaders like Doublehead, Big Jake and others had to fake their deaths to stop the wholesale massacre of their people. Remember, men such as Sevier carried out their warfare on the defenseless, not warriors. John Sevier coined the phrase 'nits make lice' and rigorously practiced what he preached; massacring women and children in an attempt to wipe out the 'Indians' by destroying their progeny.

No memorial exists for the women and children massacred here, but perhaps now is the time for one.

During times of Peace the Chiefs wore white. The war council was composed of additional chiefs and only sat on the council during times of war. During times of war the chiefs wore Red. Thus the color white symbolized peace and the color red symbolized war.

When archaeologists dug into the site of the Chota council house which was the capital city of the Chickamaugans, they unearthed the remains of Oconostota. They knew who it was because his eyeglasses were with him (a rarity among Indians, he wore eyeglasses in his late years), and he still lay in the canoe in which he was known to have been buried. Can the dead never rest!

    STORIES

" In ages past, our old ones were the storytellers. This was the way things were passed along to the generations that followed. For this reason the aged people made it a point to remember every detail so they could relate it at a later time. They were the word and picture carriers making history and spirtual values alive and important. In recent times we have made our old ones think they are not so important. We spoof their stories and make them feel foolish. The truth is that we are ignorant of what is precious and how to 'a da li he li tse di -- appreciate age. Rigidity can creep in and set even the young mind if there are no soft memories, no laughter, no times too deep for tears.

Age is grace -- a time too valuable to waste.
