Linda Paterson
Welcome to my web site!
I'm an artist originally from Texas and now living in Scotland. I make sculptures and drawings, and I have filled with website with photos of my artwork. It may take a while to download all of the images, so please be patient.
I first started doing sculpture at university when the drawing class I wanted to take was full. I've always been interested in art, and I have been drawing as long as I can remember, but I had no idea how fulfilling it is to physically shape something with my hands. I caught the bug, and have been in love with making sculptures ever since.
I like to work in many different media and with many different subjects. My sculptures are mainly in wood or clay, and are constructed by hand building, laminating or carving. My drawings are mostly on paper with charcoal, ink, or pastel. The subjects of my sculptures and drawings usually relate in some way to the human experience, whether implied or explicit, but I also enjoy making abstract art as well.
At university, my main mentors were Mary Visser for sculpture and Patrick Veerkamp for ceramics and drawing. In 1994, I graduated from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, with a degree in Sculpture and Writing.
After university, I took a detour from my artwork when I joined Teach for America in 1995, and was sent to East Orange, New Jersey, to teach at Sojourner Truth Middle School. Teaching was a wonderful and rewarding experience, but it was also extremely demanding, so I was unable to do much artwork during that time, although I did organize and supervise groups of students to paint three murals in the school hallways. I taught for three years in New Jersey, and, during one of the summer breaks, I travelled to the British Isles where I met my husband.
We married in 1999, and I moved to Scotland to be with him. Now that I am settled again, I am actively making my art again, and I will soon be converting an old stables on our property into my studio. In the meantime, I work out of the attic in our home.
My artwork has been featured in exhibits both in Texas and in Scotland, and pieces are housed in private collections in the US, the UK, and New Zealand.
Thanks again for visiting my web site. I hope you enjoy looking at my art.
Have a great day!
