Reviews Football Sites on the internet

Goal.Net's The Best 10 Football sites on the net Ever:

We have looked at all of the big sites out there and ranked them in order. It is encouraging to see a trend towards fan supplied content and away from Flashy graphics which hide otherwise dull sites. This review was carried out on 21st September 1998 and will be reviewed on 21st December 1998. If you would like to recommend any other sites for the league table, please e-mail Goal Net. Well done To "From The Terrace" and the rest of the sites, overall there has been a great improvement in football sites in the last six months. Lets see if the rest can catch FTT before the Christmas League table.

No1. From The Terrace: www.fromtheterrace.co.uk. Great Graphics, the content is all supplied by fans and it has a section for over 120 English and Scottish clubs. You can add to the news section, subscribe to a club specific newsletter and there is a chat section devoted to every club. There is a searchable database of results for each club and a good quiz section where you can add your own questions. It even plays the Great escape when you enter it. What more do you want from a Football site we have chosen From the Terrace as The Best Football site on the net Ever (at least until Christmas)

No2: Football Unlimited: www.footballunlimited.co.uk. This site is produced by The Guardian Newspaper and When Saturday comes. It also has a daily newsletter called "Fiver" which is great fun, it is also typical of the style that WSC have made their own over the last few years. Unfortunately "Fiver" doesn't have much content outside the Premier League. The site also has links to the Football Unlimited Network (FUN) a group of independent supporter's sites. We like the way the site gives exposure to the little sites.

No3: Football 365: www.football365.com. Danny Baker and his chums launched it in the summer with a blaze of publicity. It creates some new content but we found the sheer number of links on the front page a little confusing. We liked the customisable newsletter and the volume of content.

No4: Soccernet: www.soccernet.com. Claims to be the world's favourite football site it's pretty good but it's not quite our favourite. There were no Scottish Fixtures or results and it doesn't really express an opinion - it just reports the news.

No5: Rete: www.http://www.tin.it/rete/en/33/00001.html Has lots of worldwide content, it's a fairly ambitious Italian site that is also about the best soccer site for links. If you follow all the links there is as much content as you could ever wish, the navigation system could be a little easier though.

No6: Express Sport: www.express-sport.com: Pretty similar to most Newspaper sports sites except it's Grass routes section which allows the amateur web master to create a web page for his favourite club. Along with "From The Terrace" and "Football Unlimited" the site is part of a growing trend (Which we support) to obtain new content from real fans.

No7: Sporting Life: www.sporting-life.com: A great all round sports site. The link with the press association is obvious though and the content in some areas reads the same as the teletext service.

No8: Nationwide : http://www.football.nationwide.co.uk/splash.htm The official Site for the English First second and Third Divisions. Great Graphics although the content is a little staid and some of the statistics weren't correct.

No9: Carling site: http://www.fa-premier.com/ The official Premier league site, good graphics good stats, links to all the official sites of what is probably the best Soccer league in the World right now.

No10: Team Talk: www.teamtalk.com. Teamtalk are a telephone company who do unofficial phone lines for the Main UK Football clubs. The site is surprisingly good although we suspect that a lot of the content comes from a news agency.
