The Apple Bottom & Hemlock Acres Rail Road is a portable On30 layout. Models are built to 1/48 scale (1/4" to the foot) also called O scale. They are running on HO gauge track which scales out to 30 inches apart. The result is o scale trains on 30 inch narrow gauge track.
The theme is a basic common carrier narrow gauge short line. Like many of the common carrier narrow gauge lines that began East of the Mississippi River in the 1870's & 80's the profits of passenger & freight hauling were elusive. Alliances were forged with industry in the area to serve their specific needs. This branch serves the mining industry taking ore from the Rainbow Mine to the ore transfer at Apple Bottom and returning empty. The ore transfer dock empties into the gondolas on the standard gauge Belview & Effiingham R.R.
The mine got off to a shaky start when the initial unobtanium vein ran out. A vein of M & M's was found, but eventually abandoned, the ore was of low quality. The processors would not accept the 3s, Es & Ws which proved to be the majority of the ore. But success was assured when the Rainbow Mine struck the only known geologic source of Skittles in North America.
