Who Are We?

The QSSRL is a representative body of teachers dedicated to fostering, developing and promoting the code of rugby league in public and private secondary schools around Queensland.

The management committee comprises the president, secretary and treasurer, and one delegate from each of the State's twelve education regions. A representative of the Queensland Rugby League, a major sponsor and supporter of QSSRL, also sits in on committee meetings.

Where's The Action?

The on-field action takes place at different levels. Interschool competitions within each region or zone of a region are the starting point each year, for a busy agenda of rugby league in secondary schools around the State. The Brisbane Broncos and North Queensland Cowboys play vital roles in sponsoring school challenges in the regions.

These competitions lead to the selection of regional representative teams in Under 15 and Under 18 (Open) divisions. Selected players represent their regions at the Commonwealth Bank/QSSRL State Championships, which are held in the second half of May each year at separate venues.

In 1999 the 15s were at Browne Park Rockhampton, and the Opens at Kougari Oval Wynnum in Brisbane. In Year 2000, the 15s will be held at Ipswich and the Opens at Cairns.

Showcasing the best young league talent in the state, the two carnivals attract talent scouts from most of the major clubs. The QSSRL has implemented strict protocol for these scouts and player agents wishing to approach any player.

From the State carnivals, Queensland representative teams comprising the "creme de la creme" in the two age groups, are chosen. These players go on to represent their State at the Australian Secondary Schools' National Championships which are held in June-July.

Also taking part at the nationals each year are three teams from New South Wales: Combined High Schools (CHS), Combined Catholic Colleges (CCC) and Combined Independent Schools (CIS), as well as State teams from Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Northern Territory.

From the nationals, an Australian Open Schoolboys team and an Australian 15 Years Merit side are chosen. The Open Schoolboys usually compete in an international series each year.

In 1997 it was against the touring BARLA (British Amateur Rugby League) team, and last year a four-match tour of New Zealand with two tests against the NZ Schoolboys. 1999 presented the ultimate prize - a tour of Great Britain in a series against the English Schoolboys.

The 15 Years Merit side usually don't play at international level, as there is no international competition in this age group.

Sponsors

It is an old cliche, but nevertheless applicable to our organisation - without our valued sponsors, we could not survive. At the very least, we would be only a pale imitation of the respected and professional body we are today.

We are indebted to the Queensland Rugby League, Commonwealth Bank, Brisbane Broncos and North Queensland Cowboys, for their ongoing support and commitment to rugby league in schools.

The QRL sponsorship goes towards transporting the regional delegates to Brisbane for management committee meetings, while the Bank sponsorship assists with transporting regional teams to the State carnivals, and associated costs. The Broncos and Cowboys lend support through the Challenges and in other ways.
