Welcome to my Unsung Heros
page. I decided to do this page after watching a war movie. One of many. I noticed in
these movies I have seen the English, the Australians, the Scots and of course the
Americans. Rarely have the Canadians been mentioned in these war movies. Well I am here to
say "Canada was just as much in the war as any other country" I am proud to be a
Canadian and I wanted to dedicate this page to The Unsung Hero's. The Canadians that
fought alongside the Scots, Australians, English and Americans. Lived alongside them and
died along side them. Here's to you, Canada's Hero's
Canadians had figured
prominently in the defeat of Hitlerism. In Normandy they had been in the vanguard of the
Allied victory. The Nazi losses there were horrific -- 300,000 men. Moreover, most of the
enemy's equipment had been destroyed, including more than 2,000 tanks. The backbone of the
German army in the west was broken in Normandy, and the Canadians had played a monumental
role.
Their losses were catastrophic. Of the almost
5,000 Canadians who formed the assault force, 3,367 became casualties including 907 killed
in action and 1,946 made prisoners of war. Hitler's "Fortress Europe" seemed
impregnable. However, the sacrifice was not wholly in vain. D-Day's success two years
later was in some measure purchased by the lives of those Canadians who died at Dieppe.
They proudly sang "Oh
Canada we stand on guard for thee" And did. They fought for us and we are Canada.
Thank you so much for helping to keep us safe and free...IceDream
