Tongmu Town South-West Of Changsha And Huai Hua. Lacquered Hats Of Interwoven Trellis Pattern. Noodles, Steamed Buns On Family Stalls.
Tong Mu is a small country town near Huai Hua, on the road to Guilin. Tong Mu has many workshops where coolie hats are made by hand from a type of bamboo which has thin stems and is grown in the area. The thin stems are split and pared to different thicknesses for making the hats, in two layers of an interwoven trellis pattern, with a center layer of fine grasses and a paper crown. On completion, the hat is lacquered. Bundles of the thin stemmed bamboo are also sold in the market, and bought by families from the surrounding area, who make coolie hats in their homes to supplement their income. Most of the old buildings in Tong Mu are constructed in wood. Tree trunks and lengths of cut timber, together with farm produce of fruit and vegetables, are sold in the busy market town; the market being held every three days. Various snacks of noodles, steamed buns, stick doughnuts and other goodies are sold on family stalls during market days.
