Well, you have found somewhere to live and you must be ready for a pint! Read on... Stuff you should know...
This page is not an exhaustive look at what's available in Sheffield. That is something that you could perhaps look into for yourselves. It is (one of) your university-cities, after all. Just a few suggestions for where to go when you first arrive.
Ecclesall Road Bars This is the main student area for Collegiate Campus where you will be based in your first and third years. There are several pubs on this road which are worth a mention. The Nursery Tavern is a perennial favourite with students and lecturers. The most well-known attractions are the "Two Glasses of wine purchased = take the whole bottle" deal, their reasonable food & comfy sofas (if you are lucky enough to get one!) The former Slug & Fiddle pub has now become a trendy little bar with the usual drinks promotions and rowdy crowd. This has always been a favourite for pre-club drinks as Q-Jump tickets can usually be purchased here. Enjoy. Champs is a "sports" bar. Every time there is a major football match on television, this place is packed! The drinks are reasonably priced and the cocktails are a good laugh. Champs also has a restaurant for those of you who just cannot take another meal at Millers. A change can be a good thing but the prices are obviously not like those at Millers (or even the Nursery Tavern). Try the cake with the bits of Dime Bar on it. Mmm.
Sheffield is well-known in Britain for it's nightclubs. Republic is the home of Gatecrasher - a huge favourite for the (erm..) dedicated fans of cutting-edge dance music. Republic also hosts other popular events throughout the week. The timeless favourite has always been Thursday night "Disco 2000" or whatever year it is nowadays! Cheesy pop music as only the Brits know how. BLESSED on a Monday is sometimes known affectionately as the "poor man's Gatecrasher" as the prices are a lot lower than the famous Saturday night. Recently, Blessed has become a more R'N'B flavoured night. Go investigate the new "S2 1DJ" night here and send us a report! The Leadmill is consistently the cheapest and most layed-back club in Sheffield. (Spot the Webmaster's fave club in town!) Ignore the snobby attitude of your peers and go check out the fantastic ROYALE on Friday night. Or follow the hundreds of SHU students on a Monday/Tuesday for a student-only club night that will leave you uncertain of your own name. Also great for 60s/70s/80s/90s pop music during the week. This club could make you forget why you are at university. KINGDOM is probably the biggest club in Sheffield. Cheap and cheerful but with a beautifully kitsch and tongue-in-cheek decor that is worth a laugh. Mondays and Sundays are quite popular amongst students for the cheap vodka (Monday) and the occasional nudity and silly games (Sunday). You really need to go and see this place. Just try and keep your clothes on! BED is the sister club of Republic and now hosts the Skool Disco. I don't really know if this means the same thing to the French students. Just ask your English collegues what to expect from a night with this name. This night used to be at a tiny club called The Unit which is no longer with us. It grew and became Sheffield's most crowded weekly event. Probably. See there website or your Student Directory for details of this strange-looking but fun club. The CITY HALL doubles as a nightclub for regular events such as Beat Club, Hot Pants & the recently added Fairy Likuid. The video to Pulp's "Disco 2000" was filmed on this dancefloor and many people have boogied there since. Beat Club and Hot Pants are great if you want to dance to 60s/70s music. Buy a wig and some stupid clothes from Freshman's (off West Street) and dance in a ridiculous way. Just as mad is the crazy Fairy Likuid. This is a gay event which was set-up by a group of current and past students from SHU and "the other" university. The manager, Katie, previously ran the franchised "Poptastic" event and has now eclipsed it with this funky and varied pop-fest. Even if you're straight, head down here for shameless pop and an opportunity to learn those Steps dances from those in the know! (I still never got them!) Be warned however that, as this is essentially a gay event, if you have an attitude then take it elsewhere. For everybody else, have a VK for me. There are about a hundred other clubs and bars in Sheffield so arm yourself with your bankcard, NUS card and your Student Directory then GO EXPLORE...
