My Favorite Apple Varieties

(In Alphabetical Order)

  1. Fuiji- Fuji apples are a popular variety that I recently discovered while vacationing in California. They were developed in Japan by crossing Red Delicious with the lesser known Ralls Janet variety (what a wonderful name for an apple). This combination creates a crisp, sweet product that I just cant seem to get enough of. It is perfect for baking or eating directly.

  2. Gala- Gala are grown Down Under in New Zealand and were brought to the United States in 1972. They are known for their sweetness and are quite aromatic.

  3. Golden Delicious- The name says it all. Golden Delicious have been coined "mellow yellow." Originating in West Virginia they are a great all-purpose apple because of their sweet mellow taste and versatility.

  4. Granny Smith- These apples are synonymous with Waldorf salads which their tart, tangy taste compliments so well. The paler the skin is the sweeter the fruit.

  5. Jonathan- Its yellow stripes on a red shell make it very unique looking. Like Granny Smiths its flavor is tart.

  6. McIntosh- This is a unique variety because it comes in an array of colors, from yellow to multiple shades of red. So just choose your favorite or try them all.

  7. Red Delicious- This sweet, juicy apple is Americas favorite apple to snack on.

  8. Rome- When in Rome do like the RomansWell, only if theyre eating apples! Like McIntoshs, Romes come in more than one color. Their tart flavor makes them perfect for baking. An additional bonus is that they retain their shape when cooked. So they will not only be delectable but aesthetically pleasing as well.

  9. Transparent- These are a favorite for applesauce.

  10. Winesap- Winesaps are a good apple to pick in orchards because they last a long time so stock up! Its also a favorite for cider.
